What Dog Is A Great Companion For Any Border Collie Mix

Border Collies are eager-to-please, high-energy dogs.

If you want a pal for your dog that is part Border Collie, consider one of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Herding Group breeds. Border Collies are high-energy, intense dogs that like a job and plenty of exercise. They are the workaholics of the AKC Herding Group and need a companion that can match their energy. A dog with the same nature is good company for a Border Collie mix and will help to provide the exercise the dog needs.

Topping the list of breeds that fit this bill are Australian Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog and Belgian Tervuren. They match a Border Collie's drive and size. Although the Herding Group contains 25 breeds, many are happier on the couch than chasing sheep.

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is a perfect match for a Border Collie mix and has a similar appearance. It averages 18 to 23 inches at the shoulder, comparable to the Border Collie's 18 to 22 inches. Males generally weigh 50 to 65 lbs. and females 40 to 55 lbs.

Like the Border Collie, this dog needs lots of exercise to be happy. It is a very intelligent breed and excels in canine performance sports such as agility and herding. It also is very attached to its owners and family members and has a strong instinct to herd and guard. Its coat is similar to the Border Collie's coat in texture and requires weekly brushing. The breed includes a variety of colors with shades of gray, called merle; sable and solid colors.

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dogs like a job to do.

The Australian Cattle dog shares similarities with a Border Collie but is different in appearance. It has a shorter coat than a Border Collie and stands 17 to 20 inches at the shoulder. A full-grown Cattle Dog weighs 44 to 62 lbs. This breed requires less grooming than a Border Collie, and an occasional bath and brushing keeps the breed's members looking good.

This dog loves affection and is very loyal to family members but cautious with strangers. It is very trainable, but it requires an alpha owner to be head of the "pack." As its name suggests, it is considered a wonderful herding dog, and it also excels at sports such as agility, herding and obedience.

Belgian Tervuren

Belgian Tervurens are easily trained.

The Belgian Tervuren, also known as the Belgian Shepherd, matches the Border Collie in intelligence and courage, and it is very devoted to its owner and family. Slightly larger than the Border Collie at 22 to 26 inches, a full-grown Belgian Tervuren weighs about 65 lbs. Its coat ranges from light brown to mahogany, usually with black shading. This kind of dog needs frequent brushing -- a few times a week -- to remove loose undercoat.

The dog is lively, has a personality considered wonderful and trains well. It loves a job and excels at performance sports such as fly ball, agility and herding.

AKC Information

The AKC's Herding Group includes dog breeds of various sizes and temperaments. These dogs are known for their instinct to "herd" and control movement. In the absence of a sheep or cow to herd, they frequently try to herd their family members. They are considered excellent family dogs, intelligent and loyal.

Photographs and descriptions of the more than 100 dog breeds recognized by the AKC are on the organization's website, which is linked in the Resources section. The AKC divides the breeds into seven groups: Herding, Sporting, Hound, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Working.

Tennessee Dog Laws and regulations

Pit bulls may not be welcome in some areas of Tennessee.

Pit bulls are lovable creatures. They are commonly used as pets or guard dogs because of their strength and loyalty. Unfortunately, the growing incidences of injuries and death attributed to these pets have led to the introduction of tougher laws on their control by numerous states. An example of one such state is Tennessee.

Proposed State Legislative Ban

In 2008, Senator Tommy Kilby put forward a bill that, if passed, would make Tennessee the first state to completely outlaw the ownership and breeding of pit bulls. After concerned cries from the public, he withdrew the ban, explaining that his intention was not to actually ban pit bulls but intended at spurring owners to become more responsible. His actions, however, encouraged member cities to implement stronger laws controlling the handling of dogs.

Breed-Specific Legislation

Following in the footsteps of forerunners such as Canada, as many as 33 cities in the state of Tennessee have adopted ordinances that place heavy restrictions on the ownership and handling of pit bulls. These laws are designed to protect people from dog injuries and encourage better ownership. Some of these cities (at the time of publication) include Brownsville, Dyer, Estill Springs, Fayetteville, Grand Junction, Greenbrier, Halls, Harriman, Henderson, Jefferson City, Kimball, Lewisburg, Manchester, Morrison, Red Boiling Springs, Ripley, Rogersville, Signal Mountain, Somerville, South Fulton, South Pittsburg, Sparta, Springfield, Wartrace, Watertown and White Pine.

The Acklen Act:

The Acklen Act of 2007 is enforced among all the cities within the state of Tennessee, to ensure that people are protected from possible attacks from dogs. Owners are liable for injuries if their dog is not under reasonable control or is running around. Pit bulls are not allowed in public places or parks for this reason. Some cities such as Brownsville and Fayetteville have imposed heavy restrictions on pit bulls which require that owners use muzzles on their pets as well as erect fences that are at least 8 feet high around their property.

Legal Exceptions

There are certain scenarios where exemptions might be made for the dog bite statues in Tennessee pit bull laws. For instance, owners are not held liable if their pit bulls cause injuries while protecting people from being attacked. There is also no liability if a pit bull causes injury while performing law enforcement duties with the military or police. The statute also prohibits lawsuits if there is evidence that a victim provoked the dog to attack. Finally, attacks within the residence or noncommercial property owned or rented by a pit bull owner are also exempt from potential lawsuits.

Rv Camping In Pasadena

Pasadena, California, and the San Gabriel Mountains in the background.

Pasadena is best known for its Tournament of Roses Parade, the Rose Bowl, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Labs. The city is only 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles, and it's within close proximity to the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains, which are easily visible from points throughout the city.

Special Considerations

Although Pasadena is an independent city, it's now indistinguishable from the surrounding urban development of greater Los Angeles. As a result, camping is severely limited in the city proper. The nearby San Gabriel Mountains have always posed a natural barrier to urban sprawl, however, and as a result campgrounds can be found throughout the mountains, which are mostly protected by the Angeles National Forest. Visitors should be aware that the major roads crossing through the Angeles National Forest, such as Highway 2, are narrow and windy. Such roads are difficult to navigate with large RVs. Due to the mountains' high elevation, snowfall is also common in the winter, and can result in road and campground closures.

Brookside Park

Starting on December 31 of every year, Pasadena allows a limited number of RVs to park and camp at Brookside Park for up to one week only. Brookside Park is located immediately south of the Rose Bowl stadium; it is also within walking distance of downtown Pasadena, and the Gamble House, a national historic landmark renowned for its arts and crafts style architecture. The park does not have any electrical, water or sewage hookups. Spaces are given out on a first-come first-serve basis beginning at noon on December 31.

Monte Cristo

A small seasonal creek cuts through the middle of Monte Cristo campground, which is located in the Angeles National Forest north of Pasadena. The campground is laid out in a medium sized loop that has 20 camping sites. The majority of the sites on the inside of the loop are directly next to the creek. A steep hill on the campground's road makes navigating large motor-homes tricky. The parking aprons are paved though, and 35 feet long on average. No hookups or running water are available at this campground.

Chilao

The Chilao campground is the largest campground within the Angeles National Forest. Over 100 sites are available, and they can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet long. The campground is within three miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs up the entire West Coast of the United States. Campers should be aware that bears have been seen around the Chilao campground. Visitors staying in RVs overnight should make sure that all food is stored away from windows, and that unattended RVs are locked with the windows closed.

Buckhorn

Situated amid a forest of large pine trees in the Angeles National Forest, Buckhorn campground has 35 camping spots. Although all the spots are available for tent and RV camping, large motor-homes are not recommended at this campground, which is better suited for pop-up trailers and slide-in RVs. Water is available, but there are no direct hookups for water, electricity or sewage. All the sites are first-come, first-served.

How House Break My Dog

The use of positive reinforcement is the easiest way to potty train your dog.

One of the most important things a dog owner must do is train his dog to go to the bathroom outdoors rather than in the house. Potty training your dog is not difficult and it does not require hours of training, teaching your dog to respond to complex commands, or bribing your dog to do what you want. To teach your dog to use the bathroom outdoors, all you need to do is teach him that you are pleased when he does so.

Instructions

Use Positive Reinforcement

1. Take your puppy outside once every hour or so to allow him the opportunity to go to the bathroom outdoors. Stand nearby while your puppy sniffs around and wait to see if he goes to the bathroom.

2. Praise your puppy verbally using an upbeat and excited tone while he goes to the bathroom. Dogs respond to tones as much as, or more than, they do to certain words. By expressing excitement and satisfaction with your puppy as he goes to the bathroom outside, he will learn that doing so is pleasing to you.

3. Select a certain word or phrase for your puppy to learn to associate with going to the bathroom outdoors. Use this word or phrase frequently when praising your puppy and when taking him outdoors. For example, you might say "Go potty, good boy!" or "Go pee, good dog!" Over time, your puppy will recognize the association between the words you use and the action you wish him to perform.

4. Take your puppy outside after meals and after he wakes up for a nap because these are the times he most likely will need to go to the bathroom. If you take your puppy outside and he does not need to go, take him back inside and wait 10 or 15 minutes before taking him out again.

Crate Train Your Puppy

5. Purchase a crate just big enough for your puppy to use as a bed. The crate should be large enough for the puppy to turn around in comfortably, but should not be larger than the space he needs for sleeping. The size of the crate is important because dogs have a natural aversion to soiling their beds, so if the crate is large enough for only a bed, the puppy will be less likely to soil it.

6. Take your puppy outside before putting him in the crate to let him go to the bathroom, and always take him outside again as the first thing you do upon releasing him from the crate. Do not put any food or water in the crate, but feel free to lay down a soft blanket or pet bed and give your puppy a chew toy to play with.

7. Place your puppy in the crate overnight and at times when you cannot watch him yourself. Crate training teaches the puppy to not only refrain from going to the bathroom indoors, but it also teaches him that he is able to control the urge to go to the bathroom until he is released from the crate.

Treat Kennel Cough With Cough Syrup

Some cough medicine can be used to treat dogs with a cough.

Kennel cough is an ailment that can easily be passed from one dog to another. It gets its name from being highly communicable in close quarters, such as within a kennel. Kennel cough sounds like a raspy, labored cough and is a highly contagious form of bronchitis that is not likely to go away on its own without some form of treatment.

Instructions

1. Consult a veterinarian before you treat the kennel cough yourself. The symptoms of kennel cough are similar to other canine ailments. It is important that you have a definitive diagnosis of kennel cough before you begin treating it at home.

2. Choose an appropriate cough medicine. You will want to look for a product that is alcohol-free and acetaminophen-free. Both of these ingredients can be harmful to a dog. If you are unsure of what type of cough medicine to buy for your dog, consult your veterinarian for advice. She may be able to recommend a specific brand or type to meet your dog's needs.

3. Administer the cough medicine to your dog based on the animal's weight. Small dogs only require a half tsp. of cough medicine with each dose. Administer 1 tsp. of cough medicine for dogs between 20 and 40 pounds and two tsp. of medicine for dogs larger than 40 pounds. When in doubt, administer a smaller dose rather than a larger one.

4. Consider using other herbal remedies to help your dog deal with the cough. Herbal tea and honey can also be administered to a dog with a dry, harsh cough to relieve symptoms and help with healing. You can combine these herbal remedies with over-the-counter cough medicine or with a veterinarian-prescribed medication. Between a half tsp. and one full tsp. every four hours is typically sufficient.

Crate Train A Grownup Dog

One of the most important things you can do is crate train your dog. Be prepared to spend some time and effort when it comes to crate training. It can be the best way to stop unwanted pet behavior. The following steps will teach you the best way to crate train your dog.

Instructions

Find the Right Location

1. Place your crate in the right location for training to be successful. This means the crate should be placed near you when you are home. This helps your dog to go inside the crate without feeling lonely or isolated. The best places are a central room such as the living room or kitchen.

2. Make the crate more inviting by including the necessities such as water and comfortable bedding. It is also a good idea to include your pet's favorite toys and treats.

3. Instruct your pet to sit outside or just inside the crate while you talk to him and give him attention. Do not make him stay in the crate. This will give him a good first introduction to the crate.

4. Place treats or his favorite toys inside the crate to encourage him to enter. If he doesn't go all the way in at first, don't force him. Use food to encourage him to enter the crate completely. This step can take several minutes to a few days depending on your pet. But it is important that you don't force him.

5. Getting acclimated: Once your dog has been properly introduced to the crate you want to start associating it with something pleasant. First start feeding your dog outside the crate and then gradually move the food further in inside the crate. Then once your dog is accustomed to eating in the cage start closing the door for increasingly longer periods of time.

6. Praise the dog. When you first begin confining your dog to the crate it should be when you are home. Praise the dog while he is in the crate and give him a few treats. Stay in the room with the dog for a few minutes, gradually increasing the length of time that you leave him alone. Once the dog has adjusted to a period of about thirty minutes alone in the crate you can start leaving him in there for longer periods such as when you are asleep at night.

7. Don't drag out your departure from the room. Once you start leaving your dog for long periods of time don't make your departure long or emotional. Give your dog a treat and some praise and then quietly leave. When you come home don't greet him in an excited manner or reward your dog's excited behavior. By keeping your departures and arrivals low key your dog won't get overly anxious.

8. Never leave your dog in a crate for too long since this can cause him to feel trapped or frustrated. Make sure he doesn't stay in a crate for over three to four hours. Be sure to take care of his physical and emotional needs in order to keep him satisfied.

9. Never use a crate for punishment. This will lead to a fear and resentment of the crate which can make training more difficult. You can use the crate as a brief time out for aggressive behavior or excessive playing, but nothing more.

Board The Cat During Vacation

While enjoying yourself on vacation, you want to ensure your cat is receiving the best care possible. Locating that perfect place to board your feline can put your mind at ease and allow your fluffy companion to feel pampered. Whether it's a kitty kennel, a groomer or another option, knowing your cat is in perfect hands (or paws) can keep your mind at ease.

Instructions

1. Research your boarding needs. If your cat despises dogs, stay away from a kennel that boards dogs. If your cat doesn't get along with other cats, make sure the facility you're looking into keeps the cats a good distance away from each other. Many cat-only facilities have "kitty condos" where each cat is in its own separate area, never physically interacting with other cats.

2. Ask about the cost per day. Some boarding facilities charge per day while others charge per week. Also ask if they have a minimum stay if your vacation isn't lengthy. Check to see if you need to put down a deposit, which is more probable if you're traveling around holidays, the summer or for a few weeks.

3. Tour the facility before you board your pet. Since this is the place you're entrusting to take care of your cat while you're on vacation, you should ensure everything is up to your standards.

4. Pack only belongings the facility allows. Certain boarding sites refuse to accept food dishes or litter boxes that aren't from their facility. Also, favorite toys might be a problem, especially if your cat drops it in the litter box. Due to health regulations, the toy may be discarded with the litter.

5. Bring with you a copy of your cat's vaccinations. You could also have your vet fax over a copy before you check in your feline. Also provide photo identification of your pet if the facility requires.

6. Leave an emergency contact number with the location with which you decide to board your cat. Odds are the facility shouldn't need to call you, but if they do, it's best to have that number available. Also leave your veterinarian's number with the facility.

Enter Your Dog Within An American Bully Kennel Club (Abkc) Show

The American Bully Kennel Club or ABKC is a kennel club for pit bulls, specifically pocket pits or pits that are under 17 inches tall. The ABKC sanctions events all over the United States. Most ABKC dog shows include a conformation event and a fun class event.

Instructions

1. Find an ABKC sanctioned event. Searching online is the best way to find out about events. You can also contact a Gottiline, Razor's Edge or Monster G Line breeder to find out about upcoming events.

2. Train your dog for the ring. ABKC dog shows are a little more relaxed than AKC or Westminster shows. Your dog must be friendly toward the judge and the other dogs. Aggressive dogs are banned from entering ABKC shows.

3. Groom your dog before the show. Your dog should have clean teeth and ears, trimmed nails and a soft shiny coat. Dirty dogs will get low scores.

4. Enter your dog in the class and show in which you want it to participate. You have to decide if your dog will enter the conformation show, the fun show or both. You also have to determine the proper class. These are usually based on age and gender. Pocket pits and champions have their own classes. In some cases, due to local codes, you may have to pre-register your dog.

5. Ice down your dog. Rubbing ice on its back, neck and head will make the coat shiny and help to cool the dog off so it won't pant as much in the ring. If you do this every time you show your dog, eventually, your dog will use this as a signal that it is about to enter the show ring.

Rules For Dog Pens

Dog pens are used to keep dogs confined in their own space. When keeping dogs in a pen, there are important standards that must be met. The ASPCA defines animal cruelty as acts of violence or neglect toward animals. Keeping your dog safe in a dog pen that meets ASPCA regulations for a safe and secure environment helps you meet standards for taking care of your animals.

Materials

Pens can be made up of many different types of materials. The most common include concrete flooring and wire mesh cage sides. A good dog pen will also have a roof made up of corrugated plastic or metal, which will keep the rain and sun away from the animal. Other materials that you will need will include a secure and correctly-sized dog house, permanent food and water pans and materials to create a door through which you can access the pen.

Height and Flooring

A dog pen must be tall enough to keep the dog in and to keep other animals out. If you do not have a roof on your dog pen, it must be at least 6 feet tall fence on all sides. For pens that are not at least 6 feet tall, a secure roof is needed to keep the dog in and other animals out. For pens with roofs, the pen must be at least 1 foot taller than the animal standing on his hind legs. For a dog that is 3 feet tall when standing up on his legs, the pen must be 4 feet tall with a roof. The roof needs to be secured to the pen. The floor of the pen should be made up of concrete and should either be sloped for cleaning, or have a drain in the center for cleaning.

Area

A pen is required to be big enough for an animal to move freely. A kennel for short-term confinement (no longer than a couple of hours) needs to be at least wide enough for your dog to stand up and turn around completely. A pen that is made for housing your dog is required to be much larger. For a large breed dog, it should be no smaller than 5 feet by 5 feet. A smaller breed dog can have a slightly smaller pen, at 4 feet by 4 feet. The area of the pen must be larger if you intend to keep the dog in the pen overnight, because it must accommodate a dog house as well. For pens that are permanent housing pens, the area should be no less than 8 square feet. The pen does not need to be a perfect square. In fact, pens that are 3 feet wide and 5 feet long will give a dog more walking and running room.

Interior

Along with a concrete floor that either slopes or has a drain, the interior of the pen needs to have several things. It needs to have a dog house if you intend to keep your dog in the pen overnight, or if you intend to keep the dog in the pen when weather might be less than perfect. The dog house should be big enough for your dog to sleep in securely. It should open from the top for easy cleaning. Along with the dog house, your dog pen needs to have securely mounted food and water bowls. They should be mounted on the fence, and not set on the ground. Dogs in pens should have fresh food and water several times a day.

Conditions

Keeping your dog in a pen is fine for normal conditions. However, if the temperature is above 70 degrees, your dog needs to be closely monitored. Pens can get very warm, especially if the roof is metal. Dogs should be brought inside at temperatures higher than 70 degrees and lower than 30 degrees, unless they are a northern breed dog, especially bred for colder temperatures. If your dog lives in a pen without a roof, bring him in when it rains. A dog pen should not be a dog's only habitat. Dogs who live in pens need daily running and exercise time, as well as socialization.

Eliminate Baby Lizards In The Home

Getting rid of baby lizards takes some time and patience.

If lizards are getting into your house, it probably has cracks in the windows and doors. Lizards can also enter through an open window or a hole. After lizards are in the house, you might start to notice baby lizards. Getting rid of baby lizards is not hard, but it does take perseverance.

Instructions

1. Repair any cracks in doors and windows of the house. Replace metal screens on windows and place sealant in cracks. These maintenance steps will keep baby lizards from re-entering after you've gotten rid of them.

2. Spray bug repellent in and around your home. Bugs are a food source for lizards, and without bugs they will not stay. If the lizards like a specific area, then it probably has bugs.

3. Plug in an electric lizard repellent. Lizard repellents emit a high-frequency sound that humans can't hear, but it bothers lizards. The lizards will leave the area where the repellent is plugged in. Electric lizard repellents are sold in home and garden stores.

4. Mix a bottle of water, approximately 2 cups, with 2 to 3 teaspoons of Tabasco sauce. Shake the bottle and spray it in the areas where the baby lizards appear. The spicy sauce will eventually get on their tongues, and they will not frequent that area again. Repeat for several days.

5. Place flypaper around the house near lights. Bugs will go to the lights and become stuck on the paper. Baby lizards will attempt to eat the bugs, sticking onto the flypaper. You can then dispose of the lizards.

Understand The Benefits Of Implementing A German Shepherd Dog

There are many advantages to adopting a German shepherd.

German shepherds, also known as Alsatians, originated in Germany at the turn of the 20th century. It wasn't long before representatives of the breed left the country for other areas, and the result is one of the most recognizable and versatile breeds of dogs. Puppies are bred for a number of reasons and qualities, and while some are destined to be family pets others have the strength and drive that makes them excellent search and rescue, or police dogs. Before choosing to adopt one, it is important to know just what you're getting into.

Instructions

1. Read up on the breed profile from organizations like the American Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club. These descriptions will give a good idea of the characteristics for which the dog was bred. German shepherds were created to be loyal, protective and brave companions, and the breed standard is what breeders strive to have their dogs achieve. It will also give an idea of how breeders select pairs of dogs to breed, and what traits they are looking for.

2. Listen to people who have German shepherds already. The best spokespeople for a breed are those who share their homes with them. Whether it's from talking to people at the dog park or reading online message boards, you can learn a lot about everyday life with their dogs. They will be able to tell you how the characteristics of the breed manifest themselves in everyday life. They will also be able to tell you just what the muscular build of the dog allows it to do, and what kinds of friendships this loyal, devoted companion has made.

3. Spend time at an animal rescue shelter. There are German shepherd rescue organizations across the country, and spending some time volunteering there can give some practical, hands-on experience. These rescues typically take in not only purebred shepherds but shepherd mixes. Working with them will also introduce you to an entire range of shepherd personalities. Hearing the stories of some of the dogs and all that they have gone through before coming to the shelter can give a new perspective on the difficult lives that some of these dogs have, and a new-found respect for the fearlessness and determination that has long been bred into German shepherds.

4. Watch canine demonstrations through the police department or any other organization that trains and uses German shepherds for work. Many of these trainers become so closely bonded with their dogs that they are more than just a part of the family. They are relied on in life and death situations and trusted as much as any human partner would be. German shepherds are one of the most popular breed choices for law enforcement, search and rescue and military dogs. Seeing the bond between the German Shepherd and his trainer/owner is an inspiring thing, as is knowing that one of the characteristics of the German Shepherd is the ability to form that bond with their primary caregiver and other members of the family.

Register Your Dog Using The Ukc

The United Kennel Club is one of the United States' premiere kennel clubs. Some pedigreed dogs will come with UKC papers and other pedigreed dogs will come with papers from another registry, such as the American Dog Breeder's Association or the American Kennel Club. If your dog has papers from another kennel club, it may still be possible to register it with the UKC.

Instructions

1. Fill out an application for registration. You will need either a single registration if you are registering one dog or a litter registration if you are registering an entire litter (see Resources). Keep in mind that both the sire and dam have to be registered with the UKC if you are completing a litter registration. If your dog isn't registered anywhere and it is spayed or neutered, you can apply for a limited registration.

2. Gather supporting documents. If the dog came with registration papers for UKC, you may have to provide a picture. If the dog is registered with another kennel club, you will need to enclose the registration and three generation pedigree from that kennel club. It is best if you send a copy of these instead of sending the originals. You will also need to provide three pictures of your dog, a front shot, a left side shot and a right side shot.

3. Write your name on the back of everything you submit to UKC. This is important because paperwork can get lost or become separated.

4. Decide what services you want and indicate them on the paperwork. You can order just basic registration papers or you can order a longer pedigree. You will have to decide if you want your papers processed normally or if you want them rushed or sent next day air. UKC also offers some publications.

5. Pick a payment method. You can write out a check or money order or you can fill out the area to have your credit or debit card charged for the fees.

6. Make copies of everything you will send in to UKC. If anything gets lost in the mail or at the UKC office, you have copies to send back to them.

7. Put all of your documents and pictures in an envelope and send them to UKC. It is a good idea to send them with at least a delivery confirmation so you have proof of when they got the papers.

Be A Dog Trainer In California

Black Lab

If you love dogs and have a good rapport with dogs, then you will enjoy a rewarding career as a dog trainer.

There are different types of dog trainers in the state of California. Most dog trainers, especially those who specialize in obedience training, do not need a license from the state of California.

Guide dog trainers are required by the state of California to obtain a license and are regulated by the California Board of Guide Dogs For the Blind.

Additionally, all those training protection dogs or guard dogs need to obtain a license through the state of California.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of dog trainer you would like to become. Talk to local reputable dog trainers and ask them for advice.

It is highly recommended that a dog trainer obtain certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) or be certified through a school where they trained, even though this is not a requirement in California.

2. Investigate companies in California to see if anyone is hiring dog handlers or dog trainers and are willing to train people with no experience.

Kontraband Interdiction Detection Services (KIDS) in Modesto California, employs and trains canine handlers for drug detection.

3. Hire a professional dog trainer and shadow them. After observing you interact with dogs, ask for feedback on your strengths and weaknesses so you can improve.

You can obtain a list of California Certified Professional Dog Trainers at www.freedoglistings.com/dog-training/california/ .

4. Offer to work under a professional dog trainer as an assistant or apprentice. Having a mentor is invaluable to gaining knowledge and being successful in this field.

5. Talk to local reputable dog trainers and ask them what school's, workshops, seminars, and conferences they recommend for becoming a dog trainer in California.

6. Enroll in a school and complete your training.

7. You can choose to register with any of the following organizations: The American Dog Trainers Network, The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, The Certification for Professional Dog Trainers and The National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors.

Recycle And Reuse Home Designing Ideas

Today's old blanket or flannel shirt is a snuggly bed for Fido tomorrow.

Instead of simply throwing things away to take up space in landfills or trash heaps, reuse, recycle and repurpose. Making this approach a regular part of your daily life not only reduces your carbon footprint, it also saves money. With a little creativity and ingenuity, recycled or repurposed clothes or furnishings can also become attractive and functional decor itemsl.

Repair Ideas

Don't toss that broken table or lamp--fix it! Freshening older items or fixing damaged ones is not only good for the environment, but good for the wallet, as well. Mend a torn lampshade with contact paper or scraps of extra wallpaper. If your armoire or chest has broken or missing legs, simply remove the remaining legs, and the item is as good as new.

Recycling Items

Recycle clothes, fabrics and linens that have seen better days. Recover a torn or stained throw pillow with the remains of a favorite old shirt or pair of jeans for a quirky, urban look. Save frayed throws or pillows, and use them as stuffing for new ones or to add freshness to pillows showing their age. Get further use from worn yet comfortable blankets, flannels or towels by recycling them for pet bedding or kennels--your pet will love the cozy items that smell like home, and she won't mind a few holes!

Repurposing

Salvage sentimental items by repurposing them for new uses. Place that much-loved old sideboard in your bathroom, or convert it to a printer stand for your home office. An wooden toy box can provide storage for linens or bathroom items. Turn old china saucers into pillar candle holders, or make that tea tray into a wall feature. Repurpose your old mismatched silverware by hanging utensils on varying lengths of fishing line to create wind chimes. Plastic bags can be stuffed in curtain valances, or woven together to create totes, planters, or other items.

Quick Fixes

Don't trash that old armchair or couch--toss on a stylish slipcover for a brand-new look in minutes. Turn a glass pitcher into a striking vase with a handful of flowers, and hang that empty picture frame as an offbeat wall decor item in its own right. A breakfast table makes a terrific instant desk--no assembly required. Today's faded rug is tomorrow's cool wall hanging.

Paint Solutions

Add new life to a dining set with a quick sanding and a coat of eco-friendly paint or stain. Renew an aged hatbox with a coat of paint and wrapping paper scraps for a new storage container. Paint an old wine rack, and use it to store bottled oils, cloth napkins, tapered candles, hand towels, shampoos, or hair products. Hit your local thrift store to stock up on wicker baskets, and paint them for storage units.

Pass It On

If you buy a new couch or recliner, don't send the old one to a dump or landfill--instead, use an online classified service or recycling exchange to offer it free of charge to anyone who will pick it up for you. And if you're looking for a good cause, check out your local homeless shelter, church or favorite charity and offer to donate any decor items in good condition. Most organizations will pick them up from you.

Suggested Food For Any 14yearold Toy Dog

Geriatric dogs need special nutrition.

Americans love dogs, and poodles are a popular breed for companionship. They were among the top 10 registered breeds in 2009, according to the American Kennel Club. They are considered intelligent, friendly and do not shed. Size and age are two important considerations when recommending proper nutrition; elderly toy poodles have their own unique problems.

Size and Diet

The three recognized sizes of poodle are the toy, 10 inches or less measured at the shoulders; the miniature, standing at 15 inches; and the standard, more than 15 inches. Each has its respective nutrition needs based upon age. The toy, however, has the unique needs of a small dog. It is important to understand the connection between toy poodles, aging and nutrition because 14-year old toy poodles cannot handle remedial therapy like younger, larger dogs. For example, a 14-year-old toy without properly maintained teeth may need a dental procedure to avoid a life-threatening infection. Elderly dogs do not fare well under anesthesia, so it Is better to maintain good dental health than repair years of neglect.

Kibble Size Matters

Toy poodles are more prone to dental problems due to tooth overcrowding.

Toy poodles are more prone to dental problems than larger poodles, according to Dr. Daniel Carmichael, a New York veterinary dental specialist and in-house dental expert at Hartz Pet Products. Carmichael said this is because toys have very small mouths which contributes to overcrowding. Thus, food gets trapped between the teeth, leading to plaque and tartar buildup. This, in turn, can cause tooth loss and infection.

The veterinary and nutrition scientists at Hills' Prescription Diet foods recommend hard kibble, which helps keep plaque under control. They have created T/D, a formula made with antioxidants and calcium that supports dental health. It is available in a "small bite" size perfect for toy poodles. Science Diet, Hartz and Greenies have all created products designed to help clean teeth when used on a regular basis.

Those concerned about their toy poodle's teeth and gums should check with their veterinarian who may recommend a dental procedure and special diet, with foods high in calcium and a routine of tooth brushing and scaling.

Geriatric Diet Concerns

With the average life span of a toy poodle 12 to 15 years, a 14-year-old is considered geriatric. It can have genetic problems like slipped stifle (joint disease), heart disease, digestive disorders, allergies, eye problems like cataracts and retinal atrophy, diabetes and epilepsy.

Commercial dog food producers now offer products that help toy poodles with specific health issues. For example, Hills W/D aids in stabilizing glucose levels in diabetic dogs. Their I/D aids in digestive disorders because it contains mixed fibers and proteins, while H/D supports heart health. There are also products for eyes, skin and bladder issues.

Science Diet Mature Health is recommended for older dogs because it helps maintain strong bones and joints as well as kidney and heart health. Fourteen-year old toy poodles can benefit from formulas containing essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Homemade Nutrition

One pitfall with commercially-prepared dog foods is their content. They are derived from what is sometimes called the "Four-D" meats: dead, dying, diseased or disabled. Such animals cannot be put into the human food chain, but are cleared as pet food ingredients. Since many dog owners are concerned about those meats, as well as all the fillers, preservatives and additives, they are turning to homemade and natural foods.

The "bones and raw food diet" (called BARF) is one of the special dog diets gaining in popularity among dog owners. Dogs on this diet eat animal bones and raw meat. On the other end of the spectrum is the vegetarian diet. People who themselves follow a vegetarian or vegan diet may want to put their dogs on the same regimen. Since dogs are not obligate carnivores, this diet may work well for 14-year old toy poodles with skin and digestive disorders.

Supplements

Supplements come in pill form or are included in some foods.

Dog food supplements are available for toy poodles with arthritis or allergies. Similar to the vitamins people take for everything from low-energy to weight control, dog food supplements that contain glucosamine and chondroitin help the 14-year-old toy poodle with joint pain and stiffness. Supplements high in Vitamin E assist with skin and coat problems.

Roof Your Dog Pen

Roof a Dog Pen

Dog pens are convenient for keeping your dog outside in an enclosed safe space. When your dog is outside, it is imperative that he be able to get away from harsh elements such as extreme heat or rain. According to Canis Major, this is required by state and federal laws. When covering a dog pen, you want to make sure your dog will be able to move around enough and get enough air. Ideal coverings give the dog the option of being inside or outside the covering.

Instructions

1. Determine how much of the dog pen you wish to cover. For dog runs 10 feet or longer, you may wish to cover about 1/3 of the pen to give your dog a true indoor/outdoor pen. If the pen is smaller than this, it is best to cover the entire pen to keep your dog protected from the elements.

2. Measure the area you will cover.

3. Cut the plywood to the length and width you need for the roof.

4. Cut the 2x4 planks into four posts. Cut the first two 7 feet and the second two 6 feet 11 inches. This difference in height creates a slight slope to allow rain/snow runoff.

5. Screw the posts to the plywood corners. Use two screws per post, screwing them from the plywood down into the posts at least 3 inches deep.

6. Measure the length and width of the roof along the perimeter of the pen. Dig a 9 to 12 inch hole where each post will be set. Anchor the posts by burring them. Place the two shorter posts at the back of the pen so runoff goes away from the pen. You can use a quick set cement to set the posts by placing a bit of gravel at the bottom of the hole, placing the post in and filling the hole with the cement.

7. Seal the plywood with a exterior wood sealer. This will prevent the wood from swelling and cracking, creating a leaky roof.

Dog Kennel Cleaning Tips

Keeping your pet's outdoor kennel as clean and fresh as possible is just as important to good pet health as proper feeding and grooming. If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, schedule time every week to clean the kennel, bedding, toys, and bowls. If your dog stays mainly indoors, a monthly cleaning should suffice. The goal is to rid the kennel area of as much fungi, bacteria and viruses as possible.

Importance

Proper sanitation is especially important when more than one dog shares a kennel, as cross-contamination can occur. Viruses and bacteria can grow quickly in kennels, especially those with several dogs or those that are rarely cleaned. The giardia parasite, often detected in soiled kennels, can cause intestinal problems in dogs. Coccidiosis is a disease resembling distemper and is commonly found in dirty kennels. Pet dander can also result in poor air quality, which can be harmful to a dog.

Materials

You need a disinfectant, stiff-bristle brush, and something to dry the kennel---a squeegee, broom or towels. If you choose bleach, be sure to dilute it at one part bleach to 32 parts water, and carefully rinse after use to avoid causing your dog gastrointestinal and respiratory irritation. A more green alternative would be a non-toxic commercial cleaner, or a solution you prepare at home using baking soda, lemon, or unscented soap.

Process

Clean and disinfect all surfaces, not just the floor. Remove the dog(s), then remove any bowls, bedding, toys and other items. Wash these separately in disinfectant. Remove all solid waste and hair from the kennel, then apply the cleaning solution and use a stiff-bristle brush to scrub all surfaces. Leave the solution in place following manufacturer recommendations. Rinse the entire kennel with hot water, drying all surfaces as thoroughly as possible. After drying, add clean bedding, water and toys and finally, your dog.

Have An Animal Boarding License

Obtaining an animal boarding license is a necessary step in becoming recognized as a legitimate business entity. The State Department of Agriculture is the licensing agency that determines if a facility complies with the state's safety standards and its benchmarks for the humane treatment of domestic animals.

Instructions

1. Contact the State Department of Agriculture for an application for a license as an animal boarding facility. Fill out the application completely to avoid unnecessary delay in the processing time.

2. Obtain a sales tax ID number from the state prior to submission to get an animal boarding license. Sales tax identification numbers are required for businesses that sell any items such as pet care supplies.

3. Include the appropriate fee with the application to get an animal boarding license. The fees vary from state to state, and they are generally non-refundable. Some state's fees are based on the capacity for boarding.

4. Expect to a thorough inspection by a State Department of Agriculture representative before you can receive your license. Inspectors will evaluate the premises for sanitation, heating and cooling, enclosure requirements, ventilation and lighting. Minimum standards must be met for the physical facilities before a license is granted.

5. Prepare to show proof of adequate record-keeping methods. Boarding and financial records must meet state requirements.

6. Get ready for your commercial animal boarding facilities to be inspected on a regular basis according to the state's requirements. The most common time frame is annually and semiannually. The same requirements apply as for the initial license.

7. Check with the local city and county offices for licensing requirements. Depending on the zoning regulations, you may require additional licensing or permits to operate an animal boarding business.

8. Provide a business plan that shows how you plan to provide care for animals around the clock. Include the names of veterinarians you have on call in case of an emergency.

Get The Cat In Advertisements

Do you have a cat you think would be perfect for television commercials? While the idea of getting your pet in show business seems appealing, there is a lot of competition and you have to know what to do to help give your kitty an "edge."

Instructions

Getting Your Kitty on Television

1. Make sure your cat really does have "the right stuff." Ask people you know, who have no difficulty being candid, if they think your cat has the kind of charm and personality it takes to be in television commercials. Getting a few second opinions, before you embark on trying to make your cat a "legend" may save you a lot of time, effort, money and disappointment.

2. If you decide that you still want to get your cat in commercials, remember that first impressions are lasting. Your cat should always look his best. Keep him clean and well-groomed at all times.

3. Get professionally done photographs of your cat to send out to potential agents. Your cat will need an agent to help get him into auditions for commercials. Don't expect it to be easy, since many animal actor agencies receive loads of inquiries from cat owners who want them to represent their pets. Check out the legitimacy and reputation of any agency you contact before giving any money or information to them. Also make sure that it is a USDA studio animal company, which it must be by law, in order for your cat to be hired.

4. Work on training your cat. Most advertisers who hire animals to appear in commercials want cats that can easily take direction and that do not have behavior problems. Time is money and if your cat causes delays and ends up causing a production company to spend more than they want, it will be harder to get your pet cast in future commercials.

5. Keep your cat healthy. No production company wants to lose time because your cat is too ill to do a shoot. Make certain his diet is appropriate, that he gets plenty of exercise and that he sees a veterinarian often for checkups.

6. If your cat is scheduled for an audition, make sure that you show up on time and that your cat remains calm and manageable. A cat that is hungry, thirsty and stressed out is not likely to do well in an audition. Feed him, give him water and bring a favorite small toy for him to play with, so he can feel relaxed.

Hotels That Accept Large Dogs In America

It can be difficult to find a hotel that allows large dogs.

Many animal lovers consider pets to be family members, so leaving them at home or in a kennel is not an option when the family goes on vacation. But finding a hotel that will allow guests to bring big dogs can be challenging. Many hotels don't allow pets at all, or will accept only small dogs weighing less than 25 pounds. If you have a dog weighing 75 pounds or more, hotels that will accept it should be part of your travel plans. When making a reservation, be sure to mention that you will be bringing a dog.

House Break A Fox Terrier

The fox terrier puppy is playful and energetic. As family dogs, fox terriers love children and are extremely affectionate. However, they can take some time to become fully potty-trained. Most fox terriers aren't completely housebroken until they are about 18 months of age.

Instructions

1. Place your fox terrier in a crate. Use crate-training when you are not home or are sleeping. Dogs generally do not like to go to the bathroom where they sleep, so placing him in a crate that is just big enough for him to stand up and turn around in should deter elimination. In addition, fox terriers can be quite destructive when left alone in an empty house. Crate training will not only aid in housebreaking, but it can also prevent your home from being destroyed.

2. Take your fox terrier outside. As soon as you release her from the crate, take your puppy to the same outdoor spet each time. This creates consistency for her and will help her become trained faster. If you take her outside and she does not go to the bathroom, place her back in the crate for 20 minutes and try again. This will help her to learn she must go the bathroom quickly. Fox terriers have a tendency toward stubborness, as most terriers do. Practicing this technique may help her go potty sooner, although it may take a few tries.

Generally, puppies can hold their bladders for about the same time as they are old in months; that is, a three-month-old Fox Terrier puppy can last about three hours without having to eliminate.

3. Say a cue word to encourage your puppy to eliminate. When you take him outside, say, "empty" or some other command. If you are consistent in using only one word, he will start to associate that command with going to the bathroom.

4. Praise your fox terrier puppy every time he goes to the bathroom outside. Use treats and affection to reinforce his good behavior. This intelligent breed loves to please their owners and if you let yours know that he did a good job, he will continue to strive to make you happy.

Rash Around The Groin Of The American Bulldog

The American bulldog is prone to skin allergies and rashes.

American bulldogs may have a genetic predisposition to developing skin rashes. These are primarily due to allergies, which may cause a rash and itching. If your American bulldog has a rash on his groin, or anywhere on his body, consult your veterinarian. This will ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Identification

A rash is a skin eruption or the breaking out of pustules on the skin. A rash may develop anywhere on a dog's body, however, common areas of outbreak in an American bulldog are the feet and the groin area. A rash may itch and often results in the dog scratching excessively.

Atopic Dermatitis

American bulldogs who suffer from skin allergies may develop frequent rashes on the groin. A skin allergy is the result of the dog's immune system reacting to foreign substances. Atopic dermatitis is caused by skin allergies in dogs. This condition often appears within the first two years of the dog's life and may cause redness of the skin, a skin rash and itching. The most common causes of skin allergies may be caused by mites, pollens, molds and fleas. Food allergies may also cause rashes in dogs, although it is relatively uncommon.

Bacterial Infections

A bacterial infection can cause a dog to be very uncomfortable. A bacterial infection in the groin area may manifest itself in a red rash that has pustules. Scratching may break the skin and only further damage it and encourage infection. Most veterinarians treat bacterial infections on the groin with antibiotics and medicated shampoos. Corticosteroids are generally not used with these types of infections, due to the fact that corticosteroids often reduce the dog's ability to fight infection.

Medication

There are medications that may help to relieve the itching and discomfort of a rash on the groin of an American bulldog. For itching related to skin allergies, veterinarians may prescribe antihistamines for itching in an oral solution or topical cream. Corticosteroids may be prescribed in the treatment of rashes in dogs that are not caused by bacterial infections. These medications may help with the inflammation associated with skin allergies. Rashes that are caused by bacterial infections may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Considerations

If your American bulldog exhibits symptoms of a rash on the groin, itching and excessive licking, consult your veterinarian. The vet will examine the rash and perhaps perform a skin scraping or skin allergy test in order to determine the cause of the rash. Determining the underlying cause of the rash will determine the medication your veterinarian will prescribe in order for your dog to be healthy and rash-free.

Take The Family Dog To Germany

Airline regulations vary regarding pet travel.

Traveling with your pet requires preparation and collecting documentation of requirements to avoid problems prior to leaving the United States or upon arrival in Germany. Most of the requirements apply whether you plan a short or extended visit to Germany, or plan to move there. If your pet arrives in Germany without the required documentation, vaccinations and certificates, it might be returned to the United States or even destroyed.

Instructions

1. Contact the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, 2300 M Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20037 or phone 202-298-4000. Ask about laws and special permits required to take your pet into the country or specific regions of Germany. Certain breeds of dogs, such as Staffordshire terriers and pit bulls, may only enter Germany for a maximum of four weeks, according to the German Ministry of Finance.

2. Contact your local U.S. Department of Agriculture office for information on bilingual health certificates, which Germany requires for pets, including dogs, cats, ferrets and birds.

3. Take your pet to a veterinarian for a microchip. If your pet already has a chip, you need to confirm its compatibility with the ISO standard 11784 or 11785, including the AKC/Trovan, Homeagain and Avid Eurochip, advises the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. If your dog's current microchip does not meet the standard, you may provide your own scanner for other types.

4. Obtain a rabies vaccination for a dog, cat or ferret, over the age of three months, following the microchip implantation, even if the pet previously received inoculation. Wait at least 21 days from vaccination to travel date to meet regulations. Verify that Germany allows pets under three months of age without a rabies vaccination to enter the country or specific regions and obtain documentation certificates, since changes in law occur.

5. Ask your veterinarian to fill out an international health certificate for your pet within ten days of travel, advises the U.S. Department of Transportation. Update your pet's vaccinations, including distemper and hepatitis, advises the U.S. Department of State.

6. Contact the airline companies involved in your travel for regulations regarding kennels and pet transportation. Obtain required carriers, water and food bowls, name tags and bedding or other necessary equipment. Ask for instructions and contact numbers for verifying that the airline and connecting flights provided booking for your pet.

7. Prepare your pet for travel by placing it into the carrier and gradually extending the amount of confinement time.

8. Write your information, including destination, contact and emergency numbers and information about the pet, in both English and German on cards or shipping labels. Make at least two copies of the information. Securely attach the information to the top and side of the carrier using clear packaging tape. Attach a photo of the pet to the carrier and keep a photo with you during the travel.

9. Provide food and water for the pet according to the airline regulations. Put the pet's identification tag on the carrier for use when removing it from the carrier.
