Definition

What's Needed In Missouri To Begin Your Dog Breeding Business

Missouri's rules for dog breeders are among the most comprehensive in the U.S.

Breeding dogs takes time, money and knowledge. Dog breeders must understand both general and breed-specific issues, including behavior and genetic health concerns. Operating a successful dog-breeding business also requires an understanding of marketing, business management and applicable federal and state laws. Missouri law subjects dog breeders to 22 pages of rules and regulations detailing the setup and management of their facilities.

Dogs

The number of dogs you own, and to whom you sell them, determines the type of breeding program you establish. Missouri law defines a commercial breeder as someone who harbors more than three intact adult females for the purpose of breeding them and selling their puppies. An exemption exists for hobby or show breeders, who can have up to 10 intact adult females if the primary purpose is exhibiting the dogs or improving the breed, and if they sell only to individuals and not to brokers or dealers.

License

A breeder who meets the definition of a commercial breeder must obtain a license from the state of Missouri. The law provides an exemption for hobby or show breeders, but these breeders still must register with the state annually. A state-licensed breeder might also need a license from the United States Department of Agriculture, unless he only sells directly to the pet owner.

Facilities

The Missouri Department of Agriculture rules covering animal care facilities apply to state-licensed dog breeders. The rules establish minimum standards of care, housing, identification and record-keeping that dog breeders must follow. Initial applicants must pass an inspection to ensure their facilities meet these standards before they are issued a license; licensed breeders receive annual inspections. Breeders licensed by the USDA must also comply with USDA regulations.

Veterinarian

The Missouri Animal Care Facilities rules also require a breeder to establish a formal arrangement with an attending veterinarian. At minimum, the veterinarian must provide a written program of veterinary care and must schedule regular visits to the facility. 2010 Proposition B

On Nov. 2, 2010, Missouri voters narrowly passed Proposition B, the "Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act," which was scheduled to become effective in November 2011. Most of the standards of care requirements in Proposition B are less restrictive than, and invalidated by, existing laws. The end result of Proposition B is to severely decrease the number of dogs bred in the state of Missouri. The measure limits any breeder to no more than 50 intact dogs, regardless of the size of their facilities and staff. Missouri Sen. Ship Your Dog As Cargo Locally On American Air carriers Via Priority Parcel Service

Dogs don't need to travel first class to make it from Point A to B.

Dog may be man's best friend, but that doesn't mean it has to travel in first class. Shipping a pet is one way to transport Fido over long stretches of land quickly and safely. Whether you're a breeder who needs to ship a pooch from Portland, Oregon, to Tampa, Florida, or a family on the move, transporting a dog via airplane may be your best option.

Among various such providers is American Airlines' cargo shipping unit, American Airlines Cargo, and its expedient delivery option, Priority Parcel Service (PPS). PPS is used to transport dogs and kennels up to a combined 100 lbs. within the United States. Kennels cannot exceed 90 inches combined width, height and length. Selecting this method, and meeting the rigid safety requirements, will have your doggy airborne in no time.

Instructions

1. Check to make sure your kennel meets PPS's guidelines. Although alternatives may be accepted, you might have the best luck with using a metal or plastic kennel that is both leak- and escape-proof with a welded or cast metal door that can be securely fastened. It must be spacious enough for the animal to stand, sit and lie down. It must contain separate food and water dishes, have adequate ventilation, not be collapsible, and include your contact information, the animal's food and watering instructions, directional markings for the upright position and the words "live animal" written in 1-inch-high letters. Kennels may be purchased at select PPS locations from between $45 and $80 at the time of publication, or standard kennel sizes 100, 200, 300 and 400 may be used.

2. Make travel arrangements for your dog. Bookings won't be made more than three days in advance, but PPS recommends planning ahead by using its Animal Shipping Request form or by calling 800-227-4622 if you need to ship the animal within 72 hours. To schedule an advance booking, you must have the origin and destination cities, your shipping dates, animal breed, kennel size, combined animal and kennel weight and the complete contact information of both you and the receiver. Only certain facilities allow for advance bookings, including John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle.

3. Drop off your dog at an airport ticket counter or PPS facility at least one hour before departure, but no more than four hours beforehand. If using an airport cargo terminal, drop off the dog no later than two hours, but not more than four hours, prior to departure.

From the tiniest terrier to the largest Irish wolfhound, hunting dogs follow their noses, ears and eyes to potential prey. Before using physical fencing to create your pup's portion of the yard, consult with your city's building division to see what size and type of fencing is allowed in your area. Enclose an area with enough room for your dog to lay down and move around in comfortably, with shade, food and water. Dogs compete in many different dog show classes based on place of birth, who is handling them, and the number of points they have won. At other times, they may compete in classes based on age, as they do in sweepstakes (sweeps) and futurity classes. Dog shows originally served a dual purpose. 3. Decreasing or masking the odor of the female's heat scents is another way to help keep the male calm. Liquid chlorophyll can be found at health shops, online and at dog supply stores. Follow the bottle instructions as the dosage varies according to the bitch's size. Giving this to a bitch at the first sign of heat until it is over may help mask the scent. It is safe to use and effective. Although it reduces the smell, the male will still mate with the female, so do not leave them together. The use of strong-smelling substances such as Vicks Vapo Rub under the male dog's nose to prevent them scenting the bitch is not effective.

4. Take the bitch to potty away from your own yard if possible; or you can douse her urine with vinegar or bleach to prevent your male from picking up the smell.

5. Training your dog to ignore things is a good tool for many situations, not just for bitches that are in heat. Dogs can smell a bitch in heat from far away. If the bitch in heat is not your own and you do not want to neuter your male, training him may be your best option. Register your pit bull with a legitimate kennel club or breeder's association to attain the paperwork that will enable you to prove that your dog is of a purebred standard. This can then allow you to use your pit bull as a breeding dog or to enter the dog in shows and competitions. When attempting to register your pit bull, you will need to assess your dog's physical characteristics to discover which associations will accept it.

Instructions

1. Ask the breeder you purchased your pit bull from to provide a copy of the document showing that there are at least three generations of purebred pit bulls in both the mother's and father's family history. Check that this document is legitimate by researching the association that the dogs are claimed to be registered with.

2. Assess your pit bull to discover which kennel clubs will accept your dog, as each association has slightly different requirements for the breed standard. Note that a pit bull's coat of the blue-gray coloration known as mearl is not accepted by the United Kennel Club or the American Dog Breeds Association, although it is accepted be the American Pit Bull Registry. Dogproof Fencing

Feel safe about leaving your dogs outdoors unattended when you dog-proof your fence.

Dogs may escape under, over and through various fence types to chase other animals, flee danger or get to food on the other side of the fence. Unfortunately, many dogs meet unfortunate fates once they escape. Prevent man's best friend from run-ins with other dogs, dangerous wild animals and vehicles by dog-proofing your fence and gates.

Instructions

1. Repair holes in various fence material to prevent dogs from escaping through the fence. Repair any holes large enough for your dog to stick his head through; even if your dog cannot escape, he might get stuck and injure himself. Fix holes in wooden fences by replacing fence planks or cover holes in chain-link fence with new pieces of chain-link attached to the old fence with small sections of wire or zip ties.

2. Dig a trench measuring 1 to 2 feet deep against your property's fence line. Insert sections of chicken wire vertically into the trench to prevent dogs from digging under your fence. Attach the top of the wire to the base of the fence with construction staples or by wrapping pieces of wire around the chicken wire and chain link fence. Bend the bottom of the wire outwards away from your property. This prevents your dog from cutting his paws if he tries to dig under the fence.

3. Dig 6 inch deep trenches directly underneath all fence gates. Pour concrete into the trenches to create solid pads your dog cannot dig through to escape your property. The concrete pads will not interfere with the gate's operation like chicken wire.

4. Remove items in your yard that your dog may be using to jump over the fence. Avoid placing dog houses and other short structures next to fences; dogs will use such structures to climb or jump fences.

5. Build new fences to measure at least 6 feet tall to keep most dog breeds contained. Top chain-link fences with horizontal boards, wires or string to discourage your dog from climbing over the fence.

Breed Blue Pit Bulls

Breeding blue pit bulls takes preparation and care.

Blue pit bulls are usually very loyal, protective and loving pets. However, incorrect breeding practices can lead to bad temperament and aggression problems, which damage the reputation of the breed as well as make the puppies hard to home. To breed loving, happy blue pit bulls, close monitoring and control is essential.

Instructions

1. Determine if your blue pit bull is suitable for breeding. If possible, obtain her KC registration details and look for signs of illness that she could pass on to the new litter. Take your pit bull to your veterinarian and check that she is in good health and capable of carrying a litter without problems. Finally, consider your pit bull's temperament. While all pit bulls have an element of aggression in them, you should be able to trust and control your pit bull. If your pit bull has a bad temperament or is particularly aggressive either to humans or to other pets, do not breed her.

2. Search for a pit bull stud dog. Look for a dog with KC registration, if possible, and analyze him for signs of illness. Ask the owners about the dog's medical history, including recent examinations. If the stud dog has produced previous litters, ask about any problems and the health of the pups. Ask if you can contact the owner of the previous litter for additional information.

3. Spend some time with the potential father. This is important to gain an understanding of the dog's personality and temperament. Ideally, he should enjoy the company of humans and not display aggressive behavior. Pit bulls with a good temperament are likely to demand attention and interaction and should seem content. If the dog appears skittish or nervous, this could be an indication of a negative temperament and he should not be used as a stud.

4. Discuss contracts. Do the owners of the stud dog want a monetary payment or a puppy? Will you pay them if breeding is unsuccessful? Ensure the contract covers what will happen after the puppies have been born.

5. Introduce the pit bulls. Most pit bulls are capable of being aggressive, so closely observe and monitor the meeting. Do not simply trust the pit bulls not to fight each other, as the nature of pit bulls mean they may make this decision in a split second without warning. Introduce them in neutral territory if possible. Allow them to sniff each other, but be prepared with a bite stick and water spray in case a fight breaks out.

6. Allow the dogs to mate. Pit bulls usually mate without encouragement within a few hours of meeting a potential mate. Watch them closely at all times, even if they appear to have accepted each other. If one dog appears anxious or aggressive, consider splitting them up to allow them to calm down.

7. Book a veterinary appointment about a week after breeding has taken place. The vet will be able to tell you if the breeding was a success and advise you on help your dog through the pregnancy. The vet may be able to predict a due date for the puppies and arrange any scans or checkups needed during the pregnancy. Typically, pit bull gestation takes about nine weeks from the date of breeding. Litters usually contain between five and 10 pups.

8. Monitor your pit bull. Typically, pregnant pit bulls may have an increased appetite and begin to seek more attention about three weeks before the pups are due. You may also notice that her nipples become more pronounced or her vulva is beginning to swell. These are all signs that birth is imminent. Avoid introducing her to new people or animals, which could result in a fight, and try to keep her calm. Around two days before birth, your pit bull may refuse food and appear cold and fidgety.

9. Set up a whelping area two weeks before the puppies are due. It is not unusual for pit bulls to give birth a full week before they are due, so be prepared for this. Cover the area with soft towels and locate it away from humans and other pets, even if they appear to get along, as this could upset the mother during birth. Be sure to have a watch and notebook nearby in preparation for the actual birth.

Train Your Dog To Settle A Crate

Dogs should receive plenty of exercise and attention, especially when crate training.

Dogs are instinctively den animals; their ancestral lineage sought out the safety of confined places where predators could not reach them. Training a dog to be comfortable in a crate means taping into the dog's natural tendency to feel safe in den like places. By going through the steps slowly and not being overly aggressive in your expectations, you can get to the point where your dog readily goes into the crate on his own.

Instructions

1. Place the crate in the room where you spend most of your time when you are home. Since dogs want to be around their humans, it is best to be in the same room as your dog gets used to the crate. Make the crate comfortable. Add a soft bed and a few of your dogs favorite toys. Latch the door open so there is no chance of it accidentally closing as your dog explores the crate.

2. Toss one of your dog's favorite food treats into the crate. Make sure he sees you and the treat. You can speak to him while you do it to get him excited about the treat but do not force him to go into the crate to retrieve it. Do this several times throughout the day until he enters the crate for the treat readily. Praise the dog for entering the crate. Do not close him into the crate at this point. Let him explore it at his own pace.

3. Feed the dog in front of his crate or, if he enters the crate willingly, right inside of it. This should not be an unpleasant experience for the dog. If he does not eat, move the bowl further away from the crate until he does. Move the food closer to the crate with each feeding. Do this until he is comfortable with the crate. Then you can continue to feed him where you'd like.

4. Take your dog out to defecate and urinate. Doing so before proceeding to closing the gate on the crate lets you know that any whimpering or crying is not because your dog needs to eliminate body waste. Once inside, hold a treat in front of the crate door and call your dog to you. Using a command, such as "crate up" or "kennel," toss the treat into the crate. Once your dog enters, quietly close the gate.

5. Sit close to the crate but do not make a big deal out of the dog being in the crate. After five minutes, quietly walk out of the room. Wait another five minutes. Return to the crate and open it. If your dog whimpers, barks, or howls at any point, do not open the gate right away. Wait for the dog to be quiet for at least three to five minutes before opening the crate. Otherwise, he will learn that if he is vocal, he will be released from the crate.

6. Repeat steps four and five until the dog enters the crate on command without the need of a treat. Also extend the time out of the room to 10 minutes. Continue to extend the time until you can be out of the room for 30 minutes. Then use the crate while you leave the house for an hour. Put the dog in the crate and wait five minutes before you leave. When you return home, let the dog out of the crate and immediately take him out to defecate and urinate. Repeat this process in one hour increments, up to four hours. With each increment, wait a few minutes after you arrive home before letting him out. Work up to being home for five minutes before letting him out of the crate and taking him outside so he doesn't associate his crate with always being left alone.

7. Take the dog out for a final defecating and urinating of the day and then command her to enter the crate. If she needs to eliminate during the night, you can first move the crate closer to your bedroom so you can hear her when she needs to go out. If she is used to sleeping through the night without having to go outside, you can leave the crate where she has been using it. She should now be acclimated enough to her crate to sleep in it without any problems.
