What Vaccinations Do Dogs Need?
Routine veterinary visits and vaccinations are important to keep your dog healthy. Some vaccines are routinely administered, while others are optional, depending on where you live, where you may be traveling or whether you intend to board your dog in a kennel. Your veterinarian can recommend the vaccinations that are best for the health of your dog.
Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza & Parvo Virus
A combination vaccination for distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvo virus is given to your dog when he is 6 to 8 weeks old, then 10 to 12 weeks and 14 to 16 weeks. Thereafter, it is an annual vaccination.
Rabies
A rabies vaccination is administered at about 12 weeks, then again in a year. Subsequent vaccinations are every 2 years.
Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is administered in the combination vaccine, if you live in or are traveling to an area where the disease is a concern. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection with flu-like symptoms.
Corona
Corona virus vaccine is given in the combination injection, if you are in an area where it is present. Corona is a viral infection that affects puppies more than adult dogs. It results in diarrhea and is more treatable than parvo virus.
Lyme's Disease
Lyme's vaccine is recommended if you are living in a high-risk area for Lyme's disease.
Kennel Cough
A vaccine for kennel cough is given, if you anticipate that you will be boarding your dog. It is initially administered when your dog is 10 to 12 weeks old, and annually thereafter.
