Catahoula leopard dogs are not among the most common of breeds, but they are on the rise as family pets and show dogs. Originally bred in Louisiana to work wild hogs and cattle, Catahoulas are energetic, independent and can be stubborn. They are also loving and loyal to their families and can make great pets if they are well-trained.
Instructions
1. Socialize your Catahoula while it's still a puppy, if possible. Catahoulas are very accepting and loving with their families and others they know well, but they can be shy around strangers. Introduce your Catahoula to as many different people, animals and situations as you possibly can. Always praise and reward it for being sociable, calm and friendly. The more you expose your Catahoula puppy to, the more confident it will be as an adult.
2. Set rules and boundaries for your Catahoula. Make the rules as soon as you bring the dog home. Working dogs, Catahoulas can be stubborn and independent. They will take over your house if you don't establish boundaries. Choose whatever rules you wish, but enforce them consistently every day. Never allow your Catahoula to break a rule.
3. Correct your Catahoula's mistake by interrupting it if you catch the dog in the act. Don't punish it after the fact, or it won't understand. Negative punishments can cause fear and even aggression. Interrupt your Catahoula's behavior and then reward it for listening to you. This will teach it what behavior you do want, and will give it an alternative course of action.
4. Use treats to lure your Catahoula into position for basic commands. Speak the verbal command. Reward your Catahoula for moving correctly. Gradually teach the dog each command, step-by-step. Withhold treats for longer periods as your Catahoula gets better at obeying. Never stop using praise to reward your dog.
5. Exercise with your Catahoula. Take it for at least two 30-minute walks every day. These will help give your dog mental and physical stimulation and keep it from getting bored. Play games with your Catahoula. If possible, give it a job to do, such as agility competition. This is a working dog that will thrive with a job. A bored or under-exercised Catahoula can get into trouble, so give your dog exercise every single day.
