Build Rim Rose bush Cages

Successfully train your blackberries.

Building blackberry cages trains these often-wayward plants not only to look better aesthetically, but also to grow healthier and be more productive. There are two different types of blackberry plants: erect and trailing. Each needs different training. A blackberry cage is more effective for the trailing variety, as they cannot support themselves. Cages keep the tendrils from growing on the ground.

Instructions

1. Install an 8-foot pole 2 feet into the ground so that 6 feet remain out of the ground at the ends of the row of your blackberry plants.

2. Install metal fencing stakes in the ground along the way, planting them every 20 feet, less if you have smaller bushes.

3. Run a wire from the top of one pole to the other. Run another wire from the middle of the pole to middle of the other pole. Run a final wire through the fencing stakes.

4. Weave the blackberry tendrils along the wires, using them for support. Train fruit-bearing tendrils on the higher wire and newer ones along the lower wire during their first year.
