Animal shelters that are not cleaned properly will have disease spread through them, and will not be likely to attract adopters. The animals living in the shelter will be unhealthy and unhappy, and your shelter could be shut down by health organizations. Cleaning kennels and runs, though, can be a very simple process if you create a routine to follow every day.
Instructions
Cleaning the Kennels
1. Take the animal(s) in the kennel to another kennel or separate area while you clean. Remove bedding, dishes and toys. Clean these separately.
2. Pick up feces and piles of hair with a pooper-scooper or with plastic bags. Then dispose in a trash container.
3. Wash down all of the kennel's surfaces, including walls and doors, with the high-pressure hose or scrub brush. You can even have systems installed that pump the disinfectant you use into the hose as you spray (this hose will have to be separate from the one you use for giving drinking water).
4. Rinse the disinfectant away with clean, hot (if possible) water.
5. Squeegee the floor of the kennel until it is as dry as possible.
6. Wash all bedding, toys and dishes before returning them to the kennel. You need to implement a system so that these items are always returned to the appropriate kennel. Laundry bags tagged with kennel numbers are one way to keep all items separate.
