Animal sheds are housing structures such as chicken coops, goat sheds and dog kennels. Animal sheds don't have to be grim, purely functional outbuildings to keep animals protected. Your shed, however, should uphold five basic animal freedoms, says author Carol Ekarius in her book, "Build Animal Housing." Those freedoms are freedom from malnutrition, freedom from stress, freedom from discomfort, freedom from disease and the freedom to engage in normal behavior.
Domestic House Style
Some of the most cheerful-looking animal sheds are constructed to look like smaller versions of residential houses. Numerous companies manufacture animal sheds to resemble Quaker, colonial and even Victorian houses. Some of these homes include faux stone veneer as an added decorative element. Such sheds create a cozy atmosphere for the animals and provide clean, dry and stress-free environments. They also project a respectful tone toward the animals on your property.
Portable Sheds
Most portable sheds take the form of dog kennels. These structures aren't difficult to assemble or take down, and they keep your dog safe and secure. They're constructed with a strong steel frame covered with mesh wire and polyethylene; often the materials include antifungal agents and are UV-treated. In addition to portability, these sheds allow a maximum amount of fresh air to flow through the structure while providing the animal protection from the sun and elements. The animal can see clearly all around it, which provides added feelings of safety and security.
Log Cabin Style
Log cabin-style animal sheds, like domestic house-style sheds, provide quaint, cozy, respectful places for animals to shelter, but they do so in a far more rustic manner. For example, you can purchase log cabin sheds that look as if they consist of actual logs. There are also sheds constructed of country-style knotty pine. Such sheds come in several varieties, including dog houses and chicken coops; some are even big enough for a single horse. This style of animal shed often has lots of windows secured with mesh screens.
