Adopt A Newfoundland

The Newfoundland is a giant breed of dog, often overlooked. If you find a Newfie owner, though, watch out, because they will talk on and on about how wonderful the Newfoundland breed can be. A mellow black dog with a thick coat (and oftentimes, lots of drool) the Newf is the ultimate huge family dog. The breed is known for its relaxed attitude and its love of the water. There are only a few adoption sites for Newfoundlands, but if you look hard enough you might luck out and find one right in your neighborhood shelter. A great idea is to keep checking www.petfinder.com, always a good spot for finding a rare Newf who is available at a shelter. Keep an eye out, adopt a Newf and enjoy the immense love you get in return!

Adopt a Newfoundland

1. Try Autumn Acres. Centrally located in the U.S. in Kansas, this wonderful rescue group usually has a handful of Newfs available at any given time. The dogs are kept on lush, country grounds (or in foster homes) and the rescuers know their dogs and their personalities well.

2. Try Gentle Giants, in San Diego. They keep a variety of large breed dogs for adoption.

3. Contact Adopt a Saint, a St. Bernard Rescue in Lake Forest, Califonia. They see Newfs come through their doors every now and then, and they're devoted to the bigger breeds. Adoptions are a few hundred dollars.

4. Try St. Bernard Rescue Foundation/New England. Located in Massachusetts, they cater to Newfs, Great Pyrenees and the loveable St. Bernard.

5. Try Canine Canyon Ranch in Tehachapi, California. They rescue larger breed dogs out of shelters and run a private, smaller kennel.
