When breeding dogs, it is important to know get them to mate. A successful breeding can produce a litter of puppies that you will be proud of. Getting your dog to mate is the first step in producing a successful litter of puppies.
Good Pairing
Pair your dog with a dog of the opposite sex. Both dogs must be well tempered when together, and they must get along. If you want two dogs to mate who have never met before, give them plenty of time to get to know each other. The best way to get your dog to mate is to pair him with a dog that he can be friends with and that he can play with.
In Season
If your dog is a female, make sure she is in season, or in heat. Female dogs go into season about twice a year. First, she will have minor bleeding and spotting and will pay a lot of attention to her private area. After four to 10 days, she will present herself to the male to be bred. For some breeds it is impossible to tell exactly when they will allow themselves to be mounted. Bring the male dog to her once a day after you have noticed the bleeding so she may mate with him if she is ready.
If your dog is a male, he must be paired with a female that is in season. Male dogs are almost always ready to mate but will not be able to do so until the female dog is ready as well. Bring him to a female who is in season and allow him to spend time with her.
Practice Makes Perfect
Young couples and dogs that have not bred before might need several days worth of practice before they get the job done. It is important to bring dogs together before you decide to have them mate so that they can get to know each other first. When the female goes into season, give her plenty of time alone with the male. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen right away. Given enough time together, dogs who are going to mate will.
