Diy Dog Runs & Dog houses

Starting a kennel can be rewarding for those who love dogs

If you are passionate about dogs, starting a dog kennel may be the ideal career choice for you. While it may require large start-up fees and permits, it will be satisfying in the long run when you get to spend time with dogs all day and walk them in parks around town. Starting a kennel or dog services requires much preparation and work, so finding some friends and family members to help out in the preparation process may be required.

Instructions

1. Inform your friends and family of your plan to open a kennel. They can start doing indirect pre-marketing on your behalf by word-of-mouth and can back up your passion and care for animals.

2. Design your logo and develop a creative and catchy name. Do not limit yourself, such as limiting yourself to dogs and having dog bones in your logo. Some kennels also offer services for cats and birds. Although this might not be the plan for opening date, do not limit yourself from the beginning in case an expansion should take place in the future.

3. Decide on a location for your kennel. Although it may look fancy to have a small kennel in the middle of the city, it may not be ideal for dog walks. Select a location close to wooded areas or fields.

4. Decide on pricing for your services. Decide what will be the determining factor, such as a flat rate per night or the requirements for the pet. For example, you may charge more for dogs that needs to be walked twice or three times a day compared to only once a day.

5. Create a business plan for your kennel. If you are unsure create one, attend a small business course. Courses can teach you the necessities of taxes, marketing, promotions, finances and insurances. Write a detailed business plan that leaves no questions about the business unanswered.

6. Register your kennel with your local city hall or town services office. There are several types of businesses you can register, such as a sole proprietorship or as incorporation. Select the option that works best for you. Purchase and obtain the proper permits for your kennel at the town services office.

7. Purchase dog and kennel supplies, such as toys, snacks and leashes so you have something to entertain the animals at the kennel. Order new supplies each month or bi-weekly, if your kennel is very busy.

8. Build a sign, create folders and make posters for your town to market your kennel. Ensure it is professional, yet friendly. People want to use a kennel that is professional, yet treats their pets with passion and the best possible animal care.
