Housebreak your pit bull puppy properly to keep the dog from using the bathroom indoors.
Housebreaking a pit bull puppy requires training the pet to live cleanly indoors by encouraging the puppy to use the bathroom outdoors. The best time to housebreak a pit bull puppy is between 8 to 10 weeks old. Accidents that occur indoors are often the result of training problems. The puppy will need encouragement and support during the process, but consistency is the main element you need to housebreak a pit bull puppy.
Instructions
1. Select a location outdoors where the puppy can relieve itself. Allow the pit bull to become familiar with the area.
2. Watch your puppy closely to determine when it needs to use the bathroom. The pit bull puppy may begin to sniff excessively in one confined area or it will pace or walk in circles. Take the puppy outdoors and place it in the designated location.
3. Reward the pit bull puppy with a treat or praise it once it uses the bathroom outdoors. Reinforce the behavior with a positive experience so that the puppy learns to continue to use the bathroom outdoors.
4. Tell the pit bull puppy "no" in a strong and clear voice if it uses the bathroom indoors. Take the puppy outdoors in the designated area. Do not hit or smack the puppy or shove the puppy's nose in the urine or feces.
5. Confine the pit bull puppy in a crate at night to teach it control urges because it will not want to eliminate on the bedding. Allow the puppy to use the bathroom before you place it in the crate. Take the puppy outdoors in the confined area, and patiently wait for it to use the bathroom. Avoid playing with the puppy until after it uses the bathroom.
6. Start the puppy out at 30 minutes two times a day in the crate when the puppy is 3 months old. Increase the time that you leave the puppy in the crate each week to allow the puppy to become familiar with its space. Take it outdoors before you place it in the crate and after you take it out of the crate.
