Obtain A Kennel License In Illinois

A license is required in Illinois for people operating kennels, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture website. The requirement for a license is included in the Animal Welfare Act for the state.

Forms

The owner of an Illinois kennel must complete and submit Form #AW-1 to the Department of Agriculture. A $25 fee must be included when submitting the form (as of 2010).

Inspection

Once the form is received, an inspection of the kennel will be completed. The Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity website states the facility is inspected to ensure it meets sanitary and health standards. If a facility fails inspection, a work-in-progress order can be obtained, allowing a kennel owner to work on the areas of concern from the inspection.

Requirements

A facility operating with six female cats and dogs or less that are not capable of reproduction does not require licensure in the state of Illinois, according to the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity website. Each license is valid for one year. Operating without a license is a class C misdemeanor.
