Raise Black Mouth Curs

The characteristic black muzzle gives the Black Mouth Cur its name.

The Black Mouth Cur dog breed originates from the southern United States. Bred to herd and hunt, this intelligent, active dog is loyal to its family and has a strong drive to work. It is medium-sized, weighing between 50 and 70 pounds and is red, brindle or yellow with a black muzzle. With proper care and nutrition, this canine will live between 10 to 15 years. The Black Mouth Cur is a bold and protective breed that requires attention to training as it grows from a puppy to an adult dog.

Instructions

1. Begin training Black Mouth Curs when they are still young puppies because at this early age they should learn expected behaviors and become social around people and other dogs.

2. If Black Mouth Curs are raised as house pets, they need to be crate-trained as puppies. Keep them crated in between meals and when they're not outside with the family. This will help them learn to urinate and defecate outdoors.

3. Teach basic commands such as "sit," "stay" and "down." Repeat the commands and reward with treats to reinforce the training.

4. Walk your Black Mouth Cur regularly to reinforce boundaries and manners.

5. Perform agility training as Black Mouth Cur puppies get older to help fulfill their working instincts.

6. Raise Black Mouth Curs around other animals and a lot of people because these dogs are herders and hunters by nature and won't do well in city environments and aren't recommended for apartment living.

7. Teach Black Mouth Curs to herd livestock and take the dogs along on hunting trips to satisfy their instinct to work.

8. Vaccinate your Black Mouth Curs to ward off any serious illness when they're puppies. Schedule routine veterinarian checkups to keep the dogs healthy and thriving. If you notice any unusual behavior, such as inactivity, take your Black Mouth Curs to a veterinarian.

9. Provide your Black Mouth Curs with regular flea, tick and heartworm preventative.

10. Groom Black Mouth Curs as needed. Bathe and lightly brush their coats when they get dirty from herding or hunting.

11. Check their paws to determine if you need to trim their toenails. Because they often wear down from activity, each dog's nail trimming needs will vary.

12. Check the dogs' ears regularly and clean them as needed because this breed's floppy ears make it prone to ear infections.

13. Provide proper nutrition for Black Mouth Curs. A good quality dog food with high protein is idea for this active breed. Many dog food brands also come in "active formula," which will provide the needed vitamins and minerals for energetic Black Mouth Curs. Feed this breed in the morning and again in the evening, as their energy level requires more than one feeding a day. Always provide plenty of fresh water 24 hours a day.
