Greyhounds are the racehorses of the dog community. They are not typically housed like the family pet, but live in more of a stable situation with small individual stalls. This is to ensure all a dog's energy is used for training or racing. For both dog and human health, your greyhound kennel must incoporate good drainage and proper ventilation as part of the building plan.
Instructions
Build a Kennel
1. Locate a level area of appropriate size to erect the kennel. To determine size, consider how many dogs you will be housing and any storage needs that will also require space. Mark off the desired area with string or chalk, and clear and level the ground with the Bobcat skid-steer loader. Choose a place that won't have drainage directly across the site.
2. Pour the cement foundation for the building according to the directions for the cement and mixer. Create a channel down the center open for drainage by running a board through the wet cement to desired depth. Give the floor a slight grade so when it is hosed out the water drains to the middle. Depending on the thickness of the cement, drying could take up to two or more days.
3. Assemble the prefabricated building on the cement slab, attaching according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Mark off the inside for the desired number of kennels. Greyhounds are a larger breed, so plan at least as long as three dog lengths and at least double as wide.
5. Install chain link to make individual kennels. Chain-link fencing will often come in prefabricated sections that make installation simple. You can also purchase custom kennels from kennel manufacturers.
