Entertain Beagle Dogs

You can play many different games with a beagle.

Beagles are small, compact dogs with a friendly disposition and a great deal of energy. They are social dogs who love to spend time with their owners and with other dogs, and it is important to make sure they get the exercise that they need. Many enjoyable games are perfectly geared to their lively temperaments.

Instructions

1. Play fetch with your beagle by throwing it a ball. While beagles are not retrievers, they do enjoy getting to chase the ball and can be taught to bring it back. Choose a ball that the dog can grip in its teeth but will not swallow.

2. Play follow the leader with your beagle. Walk in a zig-zag pattern around the yard, and when the beagle catches up with you, offer it a treat. This is an excellent way to prepare beagles for agility trials.

3. Show your beagle one of its toys, giving it the command "find." When it picks up the toy, praise it. Repeat this until it knows that the "find" command means to pick up the toy, and then start hiding the toy when the dog is not looking. This is a perfect way to develop a beagle's problem-solving skills.

4. Command the beagle to sit in one room while you go hide in another. Then call to it and see how long it takes before it finds you. This is a good way to reinforce the "come" command, and it also allows the beagle to put its excellent tracking ability to use.

5. Put on some music and dance with your beagle. There is a dog sport known as freestyle, in which people choreograph dance routines to perform with their dogs, but you can simply play some music and start dancing, letting your dog follow along.

6. Create a trail using kibble, leading from the place your dog usually eats to where you have hidden the bowl. As beagles are scenthounds, this provides a great opportunity for them to use their tracking instincts.
