An Italian mastiff puppy loves to play.
Its formidable stature gives the Italian mastiff (cane corso) a distinct advantage against adversaries; however its bulk and its fierce-looking face belie its nature when well trained and taught to fit in socially. Through their history they have been used as working dogs, especially as hunters and fighters of large animals such as tigers, lions and even elephants.
AKC Standards
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has set these size standards for the Italian Mastiff: The breed is termed "medium-large" being 25 to 27.5 inches high from the top of the shoulder to the ground for males. Female mastiffs should stand 23.5 to 26 inches. Length, from the shoulder to the buttocks should be 10-percent more than the height. The AKC says the dog's weight should be proportionate to its height.
Other Size Sources
The Original Dog Bible places the size of an adult Italian Mastiff at 23.5 to 27 inches in height and weighs it in at 88 lbs. to 110 lbs. CanineCrib.com lists the breed's height at 22 to 28 inches and its weight range at 80 lbs. to 140 lbs., while ItalianMastiff.net places it at 23 to 30 inches and from 110 lbs. to 150 lbs.
Other Dimensions
The American Kennel Club breed standards for the cane corso also include the size of the head, the length of which should be one-third of the height of the dog; measured at the cheeks, the head's circumference should be more than two-times longer than the head. The muzzle should be broad with the width almost the same as the length, which should be one-third the length of the head. The neck should be approximately one-third the height of the dog, and the ribcage should extend down half the total height, just below the elbow. All four limbs at the elbow should be half the total height at the shoulders.
Temperament
The breed is considered to be highly trainable and suited for socialization. With proper guidance the large dogs are loyal to the family group and are friendly with, while being wary of, strangers. It is protective of those it loves, is intelligent and obedient, and can be playful without being mischievous.
