Stress & Kennel Cough In Dogs

To reduce stress, acclimate your dog to occasionally being without you.

Dogs are more likely to contract kennel cough when they're stressed. If you recognize these stressful situations, you can make him more comfortable and calm and keep him healthy.

Stressors

Trips to the vet clinic or groomer or a stay at a kennel are not only usually stressful for your dog but can expose her to kennel cough. Stressful situations also include crowding and loud noises.

Stress Reducers

Exercise, training, and even calming herbs can reduce your dog's stress. If you must kennel your dog, check kennel conditions and staff and note whether boarded dogs are relaxed or anxious. Note noise levels and ask whether quiet and noisy dogs are separated. Leave your dog with a worn article of your clothing and its favorite toy.

Prevention

Dr. Robert Hines, DVM, recommends limiting your dog's exposure to dogs outside his family as the most effective way to prevent kennel cough. Two vaccines are available for added protection: nasal drops and intramuscular injections. Get your dog a booster every 6 months if you board her. However, your dog can still contract kennel cough in a stressful situation where bacteria that cause kennel cough are present, as vaccinations do not cover all types of kennel cough.
