Typing code in the Visual Studio compiler
If you use the Visual Studio 97 software suite, you may occasionally get a "Runtime error 6 Overflow" error message when trying to compile your code. This message will either be caused by a known bug in older versions of the Visual Studio program or by using a wrong data type in your code. The issue can be quickly resolved by downloading and installing the service pack upgrade for the Visual Studio development suite.
Instructions
1. Close the Visual Studio software if it is currently running.
2. Double-click the "My Computer" icon.
3. Navigate to the folder where you installed the Visual Studio suite and double-click the "Visual Basic" sub-folder. Locate the file named "vb5ide.dll."
4. Right-click the file and choose "Properties." Check to see if the "Version" field reads "5.00.4319" or a smaller number; if it does, launch your Internet browser and go to the Microsoft Visual Studio service pack 3 download site (see Resources for link).
5. Download the service pack 3 installation file.
6. Double-click the executable file and follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade the Visual Studio program and fix Runtime error 6.
