Dog mushing is a general term for canine sledding sports and transport. Mushing is a good way to exercise and bond with your dogs and can be the most efficient way to get around in a snowy climate.
Instructions
1. Buy or adopt a dog. Any medium or large-breed dog is capable of pulling a sled. The dog's temperament is much more important than its breed, although Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and Samoyeds are often associated with sledding sports. Puppies tend to be easier to train than older dogs, but avoid letting your dog's age discourage you from getting started.
2. Harness your dog using a harness designed specifically for pulling weight. There's no need to buy a lead from a pet store. Those are intended only for walking your dog. It's best to take your dog into a sled dog equipment outfitter to be properly fitted.
3. Play with your dog while its harnessed. You want the dog to associate the harness with having fun. Once playtime stops being fun, it's time to stop for the day. Always end the session with praise and a treat.
4. Take your dog to the vet for a physical. Sled dogs have very specific nutritional needs and your vet can give you a diet plan. You also want to make sure the dog has no underlying health conditions that could be worsened by strenuous activity.
5. Decide which mushing sport is best for you and your dog. If you have only one dog, then skijorning is probably the best option because it doesn't require the dog to pull an excessive amount of weight. Sledding requires at least two dogs. The various sports require different equipment. A sledding equipment outfitter can help you purchase the necessary equipment.
6. Contact a local racing kennel and ask if you can volunteer in exchange for driving lessons and training. If you can, find an experienced driver who is willing to take you on as an apprentice.
7. Enroll your dogs in a basic obedience class. In addition to learning mushing commands, your dogs must be well trained. There are many distractions in nature and your team must listen to you rather than chase rabbits.
