Details About Chihuahua Dogs

Facts About Chihuahua Dogs

With a fiercely loyal personality and a cute, pint-sized appearance, Chihuahua dogs are one of the most popular pet breeds in the United States. There are many intriguing facts about Chihuahua dogs, including that they are the smallest dog breed in the world and the oldest breed in the Americas.

Size

With a weight range of just 2 to 6 pounds and a height of 6 to 9 inches it becomes apparent why their size is one of the more widely known facts about Chihuahua dogs.

Features

Chihuahua dogs have heads the shape of an apple; pointy muzzles; large, dark eyes; and erect ears. While there is a long-haired version, short-haired Chihuahua dogs are much more common, and their coat can come in many colors.

Temperament

Chihuahuas make ideal companion dogs, as they are lively, loyal, enjoy to both give and receive affection, and can become very attached to their owners. With patient, proper training Chihuahua dogs can make obedient, loving pets.

Warning

Many people buy Chihuahuas without being aware of one of the most important facts about Chihuahua dogs--they must be properly trained and socialized to prevent a tendency toward jealousy and aggressiveness. Chihuahuas that are pampered and babied will feel they are leader of the pack, causing them to become aggressive to humans other than their owners and other dogs.

Environment

Due to their small size and origin, Chihuahua dogs are extremely susceptible to cold temperatures. Chihuahua dogs should be kept in a warm environment at all times, and while a daily walk outdoors is necessary for exercise, they do very well in small, indoor spaces like apartments.
