Dog crates are enclosures you can use to contain a small dog. A dog crate can also be used for storage in a vehicle, such as a van. This means that dog crates may be used to transport pets or as storage racks.
Instructions
Cut the Wood
1. Measure the width, length and height of the back area of your van with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurements on a piece of paper.
2. Determine how big to make the dog crates based on the measurements. You should be able to make at least four dog crates that measure 20 inches wide, 25 inches deep and 20 inches high.
3. Measure a half-inch plywood sheet to 20 inches by 25 inches. Make cut marks on the plywood using the pencil. Cut the plywood to this size using the table saw. Repeat this step to cut three more pieces of plywood.
4. Measure and cut a half-inch plywood sheet to 20 inches by 2½ inches. Repeat this step to cut out seven more pieces of plywood.
5. Measure and cut a half-inch plywood sheet to 20½ inches by 25 inches. Repeat this step to cut out three more pieces.
6. Measure and cut a half-inch plywood sheet to 21 inches by 25 inches. Repeat this step to cut out three more pieces.
7. Measure and cut a half-inch plywood sheet to 21 inches by 21 inches. Repeat this step to cut three more pieces.
Cut Out Windows
8. Measure two inches from each side of the 20-inch by 20½-inch pieces of plywood and make a mark with the pencil. Connect the marks with a straight edge.
9. Drill a hole on each corner with the power drill, and then cut around the outline with the jig saw.
10. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the 21-inch by 21-inch pieces of plywood.
11. Place the chicken wire over the plywood frames and secure it with staples using the staple gun.
Assemble Dog Crate
12. Place a 20-inch by 20½ -inch piece on the side of a 20-inch by 25-inch piece. Drill pilot holes into the wood with the power drill. Repeat this step on the opposite side of the 20-inch by 25-inch piece.
13. Place a 20½-inch by 25-inch piece on the side of the 20-inch by 25-inch piece. Drill pilot holes in the wood with the power drill.
14. Use screws to secure the pieces of plywood together in the shape of a box.
15. Place a 21-inch by 25-inch piece on the top of the assembled plywood and drill pilot holes along each edge. Secure the top of the dog crate with screws.
16. Attach hinges to the side a 21-inch by 21-inch door with screws. Set the door in place on the assembled dog crate and secure it with screws.
