Qualities From The Husky Breed

Siberian huskies are hardy dogs.

The Siberian husky is the only husky breed, according to the American Kennel Club and the U.K. Kennel Club. Originally bred in Northeast Asia in the Siberian Peninsula, the Siberian husky is a working sled dog. Siberian huskies are energetic and need loads of daily exercise. They have a thick coat to protect them from subzero temperatures, which require brushing at least once a week.

Coat and Color

Siberian huskies have a dense double coat, which is medium in length. The soft undercoat is generally absent during shedding. The breed comes in all colors and markings, from pure white and pure black to various color combinations, such as gray and white, and tan and black. Patterns on the head are common, including dark spots and large black, gray or brown patches.

Size and Proportion

Siberian huskies are medium-size dogs. Males are about 21 to 23.5 inches tall at withers, or the shoulder blades, while females measure about 20 to 22 inches in height. Male huskies often weigh 45 lbs. to 60 lbs. while bitches are 35 lbs. to 50 lbs. According to the American Kennel Club, taller dogs do not follow breed standards and cannot be registered as purebred dogs.

Head

Siberian huskies have almond-shaped eyes, which can be brown or blue. Siberian huskies have triangular, erect ears set high on the head. The top of the skull is slightly rounded, and the muzzle is medium in length and width. The nose is black in tan, gray and black dogs, but it is often flesh colored in white dogs.

Temperament

Siberian huskies are friendly, gentle, alert, intelligent and outgoing, according to the U.K. Kennel Club. Siberian huskies do not show the behavior of a guard dog, as they are generally not suspicious with strangers or aggressive toward other dogs. Above all, both female and male Siberian huskies are willing workers and capable of great endurance.
