Install Chain Link Dog Run

Many dog owners are reluctant to allow their dog to stay inside when they are away because some breeds of dogs can become destructive when left unsupervised. Allowing dogs to run free outside is seldom a solution to this problem because it is unsafe for the dog and possibly unsafe for the neighbors. One way to feel safe leaving a dog unsupervised is to construct a chain link dog run. This project can be completed in a weekend with materials obtained from any home store.

Instructions

Construct a chain link dog run

1. Choose a site that is in partial sun and partial shade. Use a shovel to level an area 10 feet by five feet. Once the area is level, excavate four inches of soil and take it away in the wheelbarrow. Use the saw, hammer and nails to cut and form the scrap wood into a square that fits the hole made by the excavated soil.

2. Dig six holes that are two feet deep and 18 inches across. One hole should be at each corner of the excavated area. The other two holes should be placed midway on each of the longest sides of the excavated area.

3. Contact a concrete company to deliver one cubic yard of standard mix concrete. Have the concrete company pour this concrete into the scrap wood form and the six holes. Place the six chain link posts into the holes so each one is vertical. Level the concrete by dragging a piece of wood across the entire area. Let dry overnight.

4. Attach the gate to two of the posts that are five feet apart using the gate mounting hardware. Make sure the gate is low enough to the concrete so your dog cannot escape beneath it.

5. Attach the chain link fencing material to one of the corner posts that holds the gate. Use at least three fence ties to attach the material. Continue rolling and stretching the fence material to the center post on the same side of the concrete slab as the starting gate post. Attach the fence to this post with at least three fence ties. Continue this process until the entire slab is enclosed with fencing material.

6. Inspect the dog run. Each post should have at least three fence ties and the ends of the ties should face outside the dog run. The gate should operate smoothly and close tightly. Make any adjustments necessary. Your dog run is now ready for occupancy
