Obtain A Job Like A Dog Kennel Assistant

Dog kennel assistants make sure dogs have human interaction.

People who enjoy interacting with dogs but are not qualified to become veterinarians, can work as dog kennel assistants. A dog kennel assistant is someone who provides care to dogs that are boarded in kennels. Some of the duties include cleaning the kennels, playing with the dogs, feeding the dogs, taking them to eliminate and monitoring the kennels for normal or abnormal canine behavior. If you are seeking a career as a dog kennel assistant, be prepared to be asked to work odd hours, such as nights and weekends.

Instructions

1. Gain experience working with animals in any capacity. Even if you cannot get a job or volunteer opportunity with dogs specifically, if you can land a gig working with cats, horses, snakes or other animals, you can strengthen your chances of getting a job as a dog kennel assistant. Employers of dog kennel assistants want to know that the prospective employees are well trained around animals and animal-related care. Experience can also include something as basic as pet-sitting for dogs in your neighborhood.

2. Contact veterinary offices, dog kennels and animal boarding facilities to inquire about the open positions for kennel assistants. Talk to the person in charge to find out what the demands of the position are and apply for it.

3. Furnish a prospective employer with your resume and a cover letter. List your animal-related experience in the resume and use your cover letter to talk about your passion for dogs. Explain why a job as a dog kennel assistant is important to you and what qualities you possess that will make you succeed in the position.

4. Meet with the prospective employer in person. Submit the resume, cover letter and application directly, face to face, so that the prospective employer sees that you are serious about the job. This also gives you a chance to show the prospective employer how you interact with dogs, for if you go to the place of work there are sure to be dogs around for you to play with or pet.

5. Become a dog owner yourself. Having direct, personal experience taking care of dogs at home can make you a better dog kennel assistant, because you know first hand all that is involved in caring for a dog. When you own a dog you appreciate the delicate nature of the animal, and employers may feel confident that you will do a proper job.
