Handling and boarding dogs can be both challenging and rewarding. Most dogs are highly intelligent and agile, and can be extremely affectionate. These qualities alone might lead someone to open a kennel or breeding program. But you need to be careful of every breed's temperament--boarding dogs means being aware of the challenges presented by each breed. Before starting your dog kennel, research every potential boarder's unique needs and risks.

1. Secure funding for your dog kennel. If you're going to board more than one dog at a time, you will need a kennel area large enough to accommodate several pens. You will need plenty of space to build dog runs for exercise, as well as individualized kennels or stalls in which the dogs can rest, sleep and eat. If you can secure funding for a large facility, do so. If you cannot, build a smaller facility in a place that has room for growth and build additions as you have the money.
2. Build your facility. Your inside facilities should be safe, watertight, and well lit. Outside facilities should have a secure perimeter fence and plenty of room to play. Supply your facility with treats, toys and food.
3. Get liability and release forms together. Any dog might get sick or injured while under your care, so it's vital to have protection in case that happens. Decide in advance what forms you'll have your clients sign. Most important are forms allowing you to seek veterinary treatment for dogs you're boarding. You should also consider carrying extra insurance on your kennel.
4. Gather and establish references for your dog kennel. All dog owners are protective of their dogs, and will want to know that you're going to do a good job. Start by boarding the dogs of friends and family to build a good foundation of references.
5. Develop a relationship with a specific veterinary office. Vets and vet offices give recommendations about dog-boarding facilities to their clients, so this is a good way to advertise your new kennel. Some vets will want to establish mutual agreements: they will send clients to your kennel if you bring your kennel business to them.
6. Advertise and market your new dog kennel to bring in business. Now that you've established your facility and paperwork, you need to get boarders to come through your doors. Advertising can be done through fliers placed in pet stores, vet offices and dog-friendly places such as dog parks.
