The United Kennel Club (UKC) promotes many dog sports and shows, including dog agility. By registering a dog with the association, a competitor can enter all UKC-sanctioned agility trials and become a part of the dog sports community. UKC accepts mixed breeds as well as purebred dogs, and also has a junior handler program so the entire family can participate.
Instructions
1. Check the UKC website to determine what type of registration your dog is eligible for. Purebred dogs of unknown or incomplete pedigrees, purebred dogs registered with registries the UKC does not acknowledge and mixed breed dogs can register with the Limited Privilege program. This allows the dog to enter all working events including agility, but the dog is ineligible for conformation shows. Purebred dogs registered with a UKC-recognized registry are eligible for a single registration and do not have to be spayed or neutered. Dogs from UKC-registered parents are eligible for permanent registration.
2. Print the forms directly from the UKC website or contact them and have forms mailed to your house. If your dog is purebred, you will need a copy of the pedigree from a recognized registry. UKC recognizes AKC, the Canadian Kennel Club, the Kennel Club of Great Britain and all European FCI registries. If you are applying for a Limited Privilege registration, you will need proof from a veterinarian that the dog is spayed or neutered.
3. Your dog is eligible to enter all UKC--sanctioned events as soon as you have his registration card and number. To enter an agility trial, search the UKC site for upcoming events and read the attached premium, which is a guide to rules for the trial.
4. Measure your dog. Agility is run in three classes dependent on the height of the dog at the withers. The dog's height determines jump heights, crawl tunnel height and pause table height. A dog’s height is determined by drawing a straight line from the top of the withers perpendicular to the ground while the dog is standing normally and not leaning. Each exhibitor is required to include the height of her dog when entering a dog in an agility event. If your dog is on the borderline between two heights, ask the trial judge for an official measurement so that the dog may be exhibited in the proper division.
5. Decide if you want to you pre-enter the trial (usually entry fees are discounted for pre-entry) or if your plans are uncertain for that weekend you may enter day-of-show if allowed at the trial. The premium will have details and times.
6. Print a UKC official entry form from the site. Complete the form, making your check payable to the club secretary/event manager as listed in the premium. Finally, mail the entry and check it to the address listed.
