Building Chain Link Fences

Why?

Building a chain link fence is an excellent way to define the boundaries of your yard and also to keep pesky rodents away from your landscaping. If installed correctly, a chain link fence will last for years and look great with little maintenance.

Getting Started

Before starting your project, map out the area that you want to fence. It is important to contact your local utility companies to prevent mishaps with any cables or wires that may be buried. Also, be sure not to encroach on your neighbor's property. Take wooden stakes to mark out your fence line. Run a string line between the stakes. Now measure how many post holes you need to dig, usually about 6 feet apart.

Get Your Materials

Next, go to your local home construction store and tell the yardman that you will need the fence and all its components. You will also need a post hole digger, wheelbarrow, shovel and several bags of quick dry cement. Don't forget to have a good carpenter's level on hand.

Get to Work

Once you have located where you want your fence posts to be, dig a hole about 12 inches deep for each pole. Once all your holes are dug, it is time to set the posts. In your wheelbarrow mix a 60-pound bag of concrete, fill the hole half full and place your post. Use your level while you are placing your post to keep it level until the concrete hardens to the point that you can let go of the pole. Continue this procedure until all posts are in place.

Finish the Job

Using the hardware you bought, assemble your ties and caps. Starting at one end begin stretching the steel mesh from post to post. This will complete your project.
