Begin the training by teaching the papillon puppy to respect you as the leader of the home. Use words like "no" and "good" to train the puppy in responding to verbal commands. Papillon puppies are small cute creatures and have to be handled with care. Positive reinforcement works well with the papillon puppy. Papillion puppies are timid but easily adaptable pets. Therefore, you should start training them when they are two to three months old.
Instructions
1. Teach the papillon puppy to respond to words like "sit," "stand," "no" and "good." Use appropriate gestures along with the word commands to train the puppy to respond correctly. You can introduce other words like "don't," "potty" and "bad" as it shows progress.
2. Feed the puppy daily at a fixed time. Take it to a designated area outside the house immediately after it finishes eating, as bladder control in the papillon puppy is poor in young age. If you live in a multistoried housing complex that does not have easy access to outdoors use a potty tray or crate. Use words like "potty" and "go" repeatedly to train the dog to housebreak at the proper place. The papillon puppy is intelligent and will learn to housebreak properly if you do this consistently for a few weeks.
3. Put a soft harness on the papillon puppy and keep it on leash, especially, when venturing outdoors. The papillon puppy is a tiny fragile creature and might injure itself due to its playful and highly energetic nature. Start walking in another direction if it runs away or offers resistance. If it follows you pat it gently or offer it a treat to show appreciation. Use appropriate words like "bad" or "no" to convey unacceptable behavior.
4. Expose the papillon puppy to people regularly. Get a suitable carry bag and take it along with you when going out. This will train the puppy to socialize. Otherwise, it will become diffident and nip at people due to fear. Papillon puppies are generally aggressive towards other dogs but get along well with cats. If you have other pets at home, do not allow the puppy to mingle with them without your personal supervision.
