Develop A Kennel For Big Dogs

Kenneling dogs can be both very rewarding and very challenging. Although most dogs are affectionate and eager to please, some breeds of dogs can be very challenging, and even the most easygoing dog can get possessive when it comes to attention, food or toys. If you're building a kennel for multiple large dogs, keep in mind that you'll need to give each one his or her own space, and plenty of attention.

Instructions

1. Choose the right site for outdoor dog runs. The open areas should provide both sunshine and shade. Areas that have trees and other barriers will help to shield the dogs from wind and weather.

2. A concrete dog run is easier to maintain and clean than one made from other materials. Pour a 13-foot by 18-foot long, 4-inch thick concrete slab for each dog run. If you're going to kennel multiple dogs, leave at least 2 feet of space between each dog run to keep aggressive dogs from trying to get through the walls.

3. Roughen the concrete with a broom, then let the concrete sit for at least three days to harden.

4. Purchase kennel kits from pet stores or online retailers. Each will come with the materials needed to set it up, and will prove to be less expensive in the long run than buying materials separately. Purchase a separate kennel kit for each dog you want to board. Follow the directions on your kennel kits for kennel construction.

Begin by securing the rear wall to one of the side walls on the first concrete slab, using the tools and materials required and provided by your specific kit. Once the side and back wall are stable, add the second wall, and then the front of the kennel. Add the roof last, always per manufacturer directions.

5. If desired, add individual premade doghouses to each kennel so that the dogs have additional protection. Add toys, blankets, food and water to each dog run for the dogs.
