What Animal Traps Are Legal In California

Steel-jaw traps are illegal in California.

California has enacted several laws to protect its wildlife, such as the 1998 Proposition 4, which greatly restricted what types of traps can be used. Many traps are considered inhumane because of the pain and suffering they cause to their victims. Also, many of the "inhumane" traps are also "nonspecific" traps, meaning they will capture whatever animal comes to them. This resulted in many companion animals, such as pet dogs and cats, being caught and killed or maimed by these traps.

Cage and Box Traps

Cage and box traps are enclosed traps that have a door at each end or at only one end. The doors are connected to a trigger mechanism that is attached to a pressure plate on the floor of the cage. When an animal walks into the cage, it will step on the pressure plate, which will drop the doors in to place, sealing the animal inside.

Net Traps

Nets are used to capture both land and water creatures. In the water, a net is strung across an area of water, which creates a little maze that the fish can swim into easily through one of the many holes, but then will find it difficult to swim out of because of the confusion of the many strands of the net. When used for land creatures, a net is laid flat on the ground and tied to a pole or tree with a tripwire. When the creature walks on to the net and trips the wire, the net is collapsed and sometimes hoisted in to the air.

Common Mouse Traps

Common mouse traps, including glue boards, snap traps and live-capture traps, are all legal to use as long as they are only used for rats or mice. Though these traps are not considered "humane" by many animal rights advocates, they are still legal to use in California.
