The North Carolina Bioscience Clearinghouse, a website run by the North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research, states that animal behavior consultants typically hold at least a bachelor's degree in biological science. A minor in animal behavior is also desirable. A bachelor's degree in animal behavior represents an appropriate alternative. Graduate degrees provide a broader and deeper knowledge base, and can position an animal behaviorist for advanced opportunities.
Certification
A dog behaviorist's success depends greatly on professional credibility. You can achieve recognition in your field with a certified or associate membership to the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. Both membership certifications require case study completion, consulting hours documentation and demonstration of knowledge in core competency areas. As an alternative, you could obtain a supporting membership that does not include a certification requirement.
Personal Characteristics
Dog behaviorists should project a pervading love of dogs that does not depend on individual canine behavior. Add patience and perseverance, as it may take time to see measurable training results. Prospective trainers also should ensure they are physically fit and able to confidently handle even large-breed dogs. This is important for safety reasons as well as training effectiveness. Successful training outcomes depend on owner involvement, as well, so you must be able to easily interact with all types of owners.
Canine Career Components
Dog behaviorists can build a solid career foundation with prior employment as a dog groomer, pet sitter or veterinary practice employee. They can learn about regional competition by consulting a dog behaviorist directory from the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (See Resources). Dog behaviorists need clients to be successful, so they should develop a client recruitment plan that includes partnerships with area veterinarians, who often recommend dog behaviorists to resolve canine behavioral issues after medical causes are eliminated. Business Formation
If you plan to start your own dog behavior business instead of working for an existing one, you'll need a certified public accountant familiar with pet- and service-related businesses to help you choose a business structure. Select from sole proprietorships, S corporations and limited liability companies. You'll also need to speak with a licensed commercial insurance agent about business liability insurance. Visit your city or county clerk's office for a business license, and ask about needed permits, and contact your state's department of revenue about your need for a sales tax license (see Resources).
