Before you drive on the beach, make sure it's within your legal rights to do so.
In the case of beaches that are extremely long or far away from main roads, being able to drive your vehicle on the beach can allow you to focus more attention on your vacation and less on getting to where you need to be. Driving on the beach, however, can also result in ecological sides effects if it isn't managed properly. To combat this, the state of North Carolina has established regulations for motor vehicles on its beaches.
Instructions
1. Drive on the beach only if it's in accordance with local laws. According to the Outer Banks Rules and Regulations website, driving on the North Carolina beaches of "Duck," "Southern Shores" and "Kitty Hawk" is banned altogether. Driving on other beaches such as "Corolla," "Kill Devil Hills" and "Nag's Head" is restricted to the time between October 1 - April 30, unless otherwise marked on individual stretches of beach. For "Hatteras Island," driving on the beach is only ever permitted by explicit, sign-posted notice.
2. Make necessary preparations to your vehicle prior to - and after driving on the beach. The Outer Banks Rules and Regulations website recommends that you decrease your tire pressure to between 20-25 pounds, which will allow you to ride more gently along the sand and decrease the chance that you will get stuck. Remember to re-inflate your tires when you get back on the main road.
3. Obey all relevant driving laws on regulations when on the beach. Never drive faster than 25 miles per hour on any North Carolina beach and ensure your license, title and registration are current, just as they would need to be on any North Carolina road. Don't carry open containers of alcohol in your motor vehicle and enter and exit beaches only at designated on and off ramps, making sure to avoid dunes.
