Building Dog Dog houses & Runs

Making a kennel yourself allows you to customize the space just for your dog. Take into consideration the weather extremes in your area as well as the space requirement of your animal. Many different materials can be used to fit any kennel design ideas .

Design

Before you build your dog's kennel, think about the needs of your dog. If your area has extreme weather, he needs a shelter, maybe even an insulated shelter. Small dogs need less room then big dogs. Big or working dogs need stronger fencing as they tend to be harder on their environment. Sanitation is also a concern that should be taken into consideration before construction begins. Kennels that can be hosed out with proper drainage and ventilation tend to result in healthier dogs.

Taking a field trip to look at large kennels or your neighbor's dog house will give you ideas about what works for you and your dog. A larger kennel can also inform you about the zoning regulations for multiple dogs on a property. Ready made dog houses can be purchased at most pet or home improvement stores and can cut down on installation time. Making your own dog house allows you to customize the shelter portion of the kennel. Also take into consideration if your dog digs, is a fence jumper, or has separation anxiety, as these things can affect the type and quantity of fencing you purchase.

Build

With your designs in mind, look at the area you are working with and map out the actual dimensions. When building the kennel, use high-quality materials like weather-treated wood that resists the elements and lasts longer. For fencing, choose a wire mesh sized to prevent the dog from harm, and make sure that the fencing is installed to protect the dog from sharp edges.

Some dogs tend to dig under fencing and if your dog has exhibited this behavior in the past you may want to bury the fencing. This way you can see and repair holes before he actually makes his way under the fence. Also make sure to have fencing high enough that the dog won't be able to jump over and out; the height will depend on the size and athletic ability of your dog. Chain link works well for a kennel fence and can be purchased in pre-made sections. Wood is expensive but makes a sturdy and durable fence material.
