Black Russian Terriers are large dogs with a thick, curly coat. This dog has an undercoat that must also be groomed. Grooming a Black Russian Terrier for show includes special cuts specific to the breed; if you're a novice let the professional groomers do a show cut. Here are a few tips to help you groom a Black Russian Terrier at home or between shows.
Instructions
1. Brush the Black Russian terrier at least twice a week to reduce the amount of tangles. Use a coat conditioner when you groom the dog to reduce tangles and knots. Buy a coat conditioner that has protein to reduce flaky skin.
2. Use a short tined comb to groom the terrier. The short tines (prongs) allow you to brush all the way down to the dog's skin. To brush the dog, place one hand on the already combed hair while combing with the other hand. This technique helps the grooming go easier and doesn't pull as much.
3. Remove the undercoat by using a Coat King comb. Be careful when using this type of comb as you can remove too much undercoat. You are the best judge of how often your dog needs to have the undercoat groomed.
4. Bathe the terrier in warm water and use a very good shampoo. Use only warm water as hot water activates skin cells that can cause an oily coat and cold water can make the coat limp. Warm water is also the most comfortable for your terrier. Be sure to rinse the dog well so all soap is removed. Soap residue can cause itching and redness.
5. Dry the dog with a hair dryer set on warm. Hot air can damage the coat and is uncomfortable for the dog. Be careful when drying the dog because you can pull and stretch the hair too tightly, causing it to break.
6. Trim your terrier with clippers and scissors, if you are experienced with trimming. If your terrier is a show dog, it's highly recommended that you use a professional groomer. If you are experienced, groom the dog by following the guidelines set by the American Kennel Club for the Black Russian Terrier.
