How Begin A Dog Boarding Service

Loving dogs should not be your only reason to want to start a boarding service. You must know handle dogs and know what to do in case of emergencies such as sudden illnesses. You should cultivate a relationship with veterinarians in the neighborhood so you can bring sick or injured dogs to them when needed. Because a boarding service demands a lot of time, you might want to consider having a business partner to share the work and take over if you need time off or get sick.

Instructions

1. Decide if you want to purchase a dog boarding service or if you want to start one from scratch. Starting a new service requires some research on where to base the business and what permits are required.

2. Have a vision. Know how you want your dog boarding service to be set up. How many cages will it have? How many runs? Will you want all of the dogs to board together or in separate kennels. Determine if you want a yard area outside so the dogs can run and exercise or if you want them to stay indoors at all times. Establish a routine for cleaning times, feeding times and exercise times.

3. Determine your budget. Figure out how much you can pay employees and how many employees you can start with. Budget for advertising and promotion of your services along with improvements to the facility. Predict what kind of repairs you might need. Include rental costs. Estimate how much income your service will need to generate in order have more money coming in than going out.

4. Get your business bonded with a reputable insurance company. Check with your homeowners insurer and auto insurance company to see if they offer business insurance. Having this insurance can protect you from problems resulting from a dog that gets sick or injured under your care.

5. Get supplies. Nontoxic disinfectants, water and food bowls, bedding, water hoses and scrub brushes are among the supplies you will need to keep your canine boarders clean and safe.

6. Keep records. Create a system for maintaining records of dogs that board at your facility; it should include the owner's contact information. Ask owners for any medical records they can share in case an emergency arises while they are away.

7. Advertise your dog boarding service. Create a website that will reach people who search online for a boarding service. Create pamphlets and offer discounts to encourage nearby residents to use your services.
