The Very Best Boar Dogs

The best boar dogs are lean and muscular.

A boar dog is used to find, chase and catch boars. Because of the strength and agility a wild boar possesses, dogs work in packs in order to best the aggressive and waspish boars. The ideal boar dog is large, fast and agile with a great deal of grit, stamina and strength.

American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is a large, hardy dog bred for gameness, drive, loyalty and strength. The American Bulldog is an all-around working dog that has often been used as a hog and cattle dog. They're muscular, with a large head and a thick, heavy bone structure.

Dogo Argentino

The Dogo is a large, white bully breed.

The Dogo Argentino is often described as "a pit bull on steroids." This large bully-breed dog hails from Argentina and was bred specifically to hunt boars in packs. This breed is solid white, extremely muscular and easily trained.

American Pit Bull Terrier

Powerful jaws help an APBT grip a boar.

Bull Dog Breeds notes of the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) that "they are indeed one of the most versatile breeds on the planet." Bred as a fighting dog, the APBT's harsh beginnings instilled the breed with loyalty, game and grit, all of which are prized traits in a boar dog. Working lines of this breed tend toward the smaller size (30 to 60 pounds) but they're thick boned and muscular.

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is also known as the "Italian Mastiff." Bred as a watchdog, family protector and boar hunter, the breed continues performing in all three steads today. It bonds closely with its handler and because of its large size and natural power, excels as a boar hunter.

Catahoula Leopard Dog

The Catahoula Leopard Dog (CHD) is a unique breed bred for hunting and herding. They've got a hound dog's speed, a bulldog's grit and the loyalty of a Golden Retriever. This breed has a very unique appearance. It looks mottled and marbled and often has multi-colored eyes. This is truly a breed that can "do it all."

Mixed Breed

Most boar dogs aren't a single breed. Many hunters have a favorite cross. While nearly every boar dog has a bit of bully breed in it somewhere, the bully dogs are often crossed with wolfhounds, Greyhounds or retrievers to give the resulting pups extra speed, scenting ability and trainability.
