Kinds Of Flooring For Dog Dog houses

Choosing flooring for a dog kennel is a decision that should be made with the best interests of your dog in mind. The flooring should be suitable for your climate, easy to keep clean and comfortable for your dog. For kennel owners with a lot of dogs, it should also be resistant to bacteria and discourage insects from living in it.

Cement

Cement is an easy to clean flooring option for dog kennels and it is suitable for most dogs. However, if you live in an area that experiences snow and ice yearly, or if your dog is predisposed to bone and joint problems, this isn't a good option.

Wood

Wood flooring is a good choice if it is waterproof and sealed against odors. However, arsenic treated wood should be avoided, as it is dangerous for use around dogs.

Dirt

Having a dirt floor in a kennel is usually not the best idea because when the dog "does its business" the dirt turns to mud. Planting grass in the kennel is a popular idea, abut you have to be willing to cut it as needed.

Hay or Straw

Hay or straw are good options for a dog kennel floor because they can be removed and replaced as needed. One consideration is that these substrates may irritate a dog with sensitive skin.

Plastic Decking

Plastic decking is an option for kennel owners who are looking for a flooring option that resists chewing, stains, odors, fading, mold, mildew and bacteria. If you opt for plastic decking, it should be made especially for dogs so that it won't harm the dog if chewed.
