The Typical Rates For Pet Sitter Services

Finding trustworthy care for your pet can be challenging.

Finding a trustworthy person to care for your pets in your absence can be overwhelming, and figuring out a fair price for pet care services adds to the challenge. The best way to start your search for a good pet sitter is asking for referrals, according to Humane Society.org. Ask your friends, veterinarian or groomer if they have any recommendations for local pet sitting services. Then, interview potential sitters and ask for credentials and references.

Comparison Shopping

Due to the steadily increasing demand for pet care services, most pet owners can choose from among several options. Independent pet sitters may advertise their services on online directories or in places such as your groomer's office. These sitters typically come to your home to care for your pet during the day and often offer additional services, such as house sitting. Pet daycares take care of several other pets and usually do not come to your home. Boarding kennels are typically the most cost-effective option if you need overnight care for your pet.

Independent Pet Sitters

Independent pet sitters are often the least expensive pet care option, but because they will be spending time in your home, you need to make sure they are reliable and trustworthy. Find out if the sitter is bonded and insured and whether she belongs to a pet sitting organization, such as the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. A pet sitter can be as inexpensive as paying the teen down the street a few dollars to come check on your pet a couple times a day. If you want professional services, expect to pay around $15 to $35 per visit.

Pet Daycare

For regular, long-term pet care, a pet daycare center may be the best option. It offers the advantage of socialization with other animals, and many pet daycares have webcams so owners can check in on their pets throughout the day. Pet daycares often charge weekly rates and may offer discounts for monthly packages. The daycare may also offer additional services, such as grooming. Pet daycares cost, on average, $12 to $38 per day.

Boarding Kennels

Boarding kennels are often associated with overnight stays, but many offer daytime care as well. Many veterinary offices offer pet boarding. Cheap kennels often translate to subpar conditions and only the most basic services, while more expensive kennels may offer benefits such as roomy, comfortable sleeping areas and plenty of daily exercise. It is important to tour kennel facilities and ask about inspection certificates. A good kennel should require that your pet be current on vaccinations. Rates sometimes vary based on the pet's size or weight and can range from $10 to $100 per night.
