Train Your Dog Kennel Worker

Caring for animals away from home

Operating a dog kennel requires physical labor and at least one employee to care for the needs of the animals. Training a new dog kennel employee on all of the requirements of the job results in a more organized business atmosphere.

Instructions

1. Explain the entire job in detail to the new kennel employee. After the new hire is properly dressed, take her to the boarding area for a full tour. Show her where all of the cleaning supplies and tools are.

2. Inform the new kennel employee that customer service is the top priority. Treat each pet and its owner as though it were a guest at a hotel. Take inventory of everything each owner brings with the pet and any special care instructions. Make a note of the pet’s diet needs and medications. Assure the owners that the best care will be provided.

3. Demonstrate the kennel policy for animal handling. Teach proper lifting techniques when caring for animals in high kennels or cages. Show new employees lift animals without causing stress to the animal or the back of the lifter. Get assistance with large or frightened animals.

4. Teach the new kennel employee properly mix cleaning solutions for ultimate sanitation. Demonstrate how each kennel should be cleaned and dried prior to replacing the pet. Explain proper ventilation procedures and where all exhaust fans are located.

5. Show the proper way to give medications to boarding pets. Create a public board to keep track of the daily medications and who has given them. Have each employee initial the medication board in the appropriate place after giving prescriptions or medical treatment.

6. Give exact instructions on the company policy for lost or deceased pets. Inform the new kennel worker that some animals do not board well and react to the stress by getting sick or becoming aggressive.

7. Train dog kennel employees on laundry duties. Show the new worker operate the washer and dryer. Give instructions on proper folding techniques for space saving and where to store clean laundry. Provide a list or board to order laundry and cleaning supplies.
