Make sure your dog's crate is the appropriate size.
Dog crates are often used for behavioral training, especially for potty training a puppy. Crates come in many styles and are made out of different materials, each of which has advantages. Size, however, is perhaps the most important consideration when buying a crate for a dog. A crate must be just large enough so that the dog can comfortably stand up, turn around and lie down.
Instructions
1. Sit down at the side of your dog. Have the dog stand up on all four legs.
2. Measure the distance from the dog's shoulders down to the floor. Any kind of tape measure will work for this, but make sure you hold it as straight as possible when taking the measurement. Write the measurement down on a sheet of paper.
3. Measure the distance from the dog's nose to the base of his tail. Write this measurement down on a sheet of paper.
4. Add 6 inches to the measurements to determine the proper crate size. For example, if the dog is 24 inches tall and 36 inches long, you need a crate that's 30 inches tall and 42 inches long. Get a crate with measurements as close as possible to the appropriate size for your dog. Do not get one that's too small.
