Although Great Danes are huge, they are not aggressive at all and make good family pets.
Giant dog breeds typically weigh upward of 75 pounds. Despite their giant size, these large dogs usually have calm and patient temperaments. Large breeds require more food than the smaller breeds, but tend to require less exercise. Giant dog breeds unfortunately often suffer from joint problems and have a shorter life expectancy than the medium and smaller breeds.
Great Dane
The Great Dane is a giant breed of domestic dog. These tall and powerful dogs have a long, rectangular head and deep muzzle. The Great Dane's ears are medium in size and set high on its head. When the ears are left in their natural state, they fold forward. Cropped ears stand erect, but this practice is illegal in many countries. This large breed possesses a good disposition and is frequently referred to as a gentle giant. The Great Dane is patient in the presence of children and can be playful, even as an adult. The breed can however be aggressive when necessary and is considered to be a good watchdog.
Akita
The Akita is one of Japan's national dog breeds. This dog can weigh as much as 100 pounds. The breed has been used as a versatile hunting dog in Japan and was brought into the United States by Helen Keller in 1937. The Akita is considered to be an affectionate and intelligent dog, but needs to be trained and handled in a firm fashion. Untrained Akitas and those which are not treated in a consistent and confident manner can become aggressive.
English Mastiff
Individual English Mastiffs can weigh between 175 and 250 pounds. This breed is considered to be the heaviest of the giant dog breeds. This large animal is an ancient dog breed which was developed in England. The Mastiff possesses a broad chest and massive head. This large dog can be brindle, fawn apricot in color. The Mastiff breed standard does not prescribe either a weight or height limit for this giant dog.
Saint Bernard
The Saint Bernard can weigh as much as 200 pounds. Despite its powerful build and commanding presence, this giant dog possesses a calm and even temperament. The coat of the Saint Bernard may be either medium length or short and dense and includes white or red and brindle and white markings. This breed has a broad, bushy tail that tapers to a powerful tip. The Saint Bernard is a loyal and obedient breed that is patient with children. They are gentle, slow-moving giants that consistently aim to please. The Saint Bernard is a good watchdog.
