Treat your dog as you would any other passenger you want to keep safe.
Drivers who are distracted by pets in the car present a dangerous situation to themselves and to other motorists. Dogs that jump into the front seat and startle the driver can lead to accidents. In an accident, unsecured dogs can become injured or they can injure others if they become a projectile. Take steps to keep your dog safe and eliminate distractions in the car.
Instructions
1. Use a backseat restraint. A zipline restraint, for example, ensures that your dog can move from side to side in the back seat, but not into the front seat. Clip the dog to a leash and harness, which attaches to the zipline.
2. Install a backseat barrier, which easily attaches to the front seats and fits any passenger car or truck. It prevents the dog from jumping to the front and causing a distraction.
3. Use a truck tether for open air pickup driving. The tether attaches across the pickup bed from side to side. Attach your dog's leash and harness to the line. This prevents the dog from jumping from a moving vehicle but let's him move from side to side.
4. For small dogs, use a dog booster seat while driving. Install the carrier in the back seat by attaching it to the seat belts.
