Texas Businesses For That Home

Make the most of Texas' cowboy history by leading horse tours.

A home business gives you the freedom to escape the cubicle and work from your couch or a home office. When you are in charge, you can set your schedule and choose a space to work. If you live in Texas, you can take advantage of the state's population and geography to start a business that will have a built-in potential customer base.

Horse Tours

Texas has a reputation as cowboy country. If you are skilled at handling horses, take advantage of the state's reputation by leading horse tours. Work with a local stable to arrange for horse and tack rentals for large groups and bring them out into the countryside. Make the most of your local knowledge and bring customers to places they wouldn't otherwise find on their own and regale them with stories and folklore. Play up the cowboy image by wearing traditional Western clothing and stopping to cook lunch over a campfire.

Business Start-Ups

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 50 percent of Texas' population was women in 2009, but only 27 percent of the businesses in the state in 2002 were female-owned. If you have a network of business contacts and experience finding funding for start-ups, start a business that helps women set up their own ventures. Depending on your experience, you might focus on low-income women, single mothers or former professionals who stopped working full-time after they had children. You might serve as an adviser, write business plans or help write grant proposals.

Craft Sales

Texas is the second-largest state in the United States, and population is scarce in many areas. If you are artistic and live in a small town without a large potential customer base, you can start a business selling crafts online. Choose crafts that you love to make so the job will be more like play than work. Set up an online store on a site like eBay or Etsy to list your products, using high-quality photos and details. Visit websites, blogs and online magazines to find the people who are likely to be interested in the type of crafts you are producing. Place advertisements for your products on those websites.

Animal Care

If you have experience working with animals, you can start an animal care business. Depending on your interests and available space, you can either board animals at your house when clients are away or visit customers' ranches or houses to take care of larger animals, like horses or cattle. In remote areas without a kennel or similar service, a mobile animal care business can be a godsend for people who need to go out of town but do not have anyone to watch over their pets.
