Gymnastic Rings Training

Exercising on gymnastics rings develops strength, stamina and all of the core muscles.


Gymnastics rings training provides an intensive upper body workout that develops the core muscles as well as improves both strength and stamina. By emphasizing stability alongside general muscle development, a workout on gymnastics rings can provide a more rounded fitness regime and accelerated muscle development when compared to standard gym equipment.


History


Although gymnastics training has been around in various forms for centuries, beginning in Ancient Greece, the first known ring exercises were described by German instructor Adolf Spieß in the mid-19th century. Speiß's exercises, called "Ringeschwebel" at the time, originally used more triangular-shaped handles suspended from ropes. The triangular-shaped handles continued to be used for more than 50 years, appearing alongside rings in the first gymnastics World Championships in 1903.


Features


Gymnastics rings training features a variety of repetitive movements employed on a ring (which is often made of steel but can also be made of many other durable materials) suspended from a durable strap. Exercises performed on gymnastics rings include push-ups, pull-ups and dips, where the user begins holding the rings with arms stretched downward, lowers his body so his arms are bent to an "L" shape, and then pulls back up to the starting position.


Effects


Unlike many other forms of gym equipment, gymnastic rings are free moving, so every movement you make has to be countered to maintain stability. This means using many muscles at the same time, giving a more rounded workout when compared to other forms of exercise equipment. The overall effect is strong upper body and core muscle development.


Misconceptions


Although the rings are free moving and attached to adjustable straps that allow them to swing back and forth, the equipment used in gymnastics rings training is not designed for swinging. Fitness training rings use a different type of strap than professional gymnastics rings, which can better cope with the impact of swings and dismounts.


Benefits


Because of its focus on balancing the body as a whole, gymnastics rings training develops core body muscles. As well as building strength and stamina, the rings can be used to develop both upper body muscle tone through lifts and push-ups, and also leg muscles through reverse lifts, which function similarly to a sit-up against gravity.
