Damp, shady roofs are sucseptible to moss build-up.
Moss are primitive, non-vascular plants that thrive in damp, shady environments, including on roof tops. Moss build-up is unsightly and can cause long term roof damage. Organic matter that is allowed to accumulate on roof surfaces slowly decompose, forming an ideal area for moss spores to land and mature. Moss must be physically removed and the roof top environment altered to avoid future roof moss infestations.
Instructions
1. Brush away roof moss by using a soft-bristle broom or flexible metal rake. Moss have thin root-like structures that make them easier to remove than other weeds.
2. Spray the roof with a garden hose or power washer to remove small moss fragments and organic matter left behind after brushing.
3. Check the roof top for debris that may be stuck in between individual shingles and crevices. Remove the debris by hand or with a smaller brush.
4. Prevent moss from returning by regularly inspecting and cleaning the roof top surface to keep organic matter and other debris from accumulating. A clean roof restricts opportunities for moss spores to mature.
5. Cut back adjacent foliage using outdoor trimmers. Trees and branches in close proximity to the roof can block sunlight and cause the roof surface to be damp and shady. Moss thrives in damp and shady environments.
