Pit bulls are a medium-sized breed of dog that come in a variety of colors. They are excellent companions and guard dogs for adults and older children. However, pit bulls have become illegal in many places due to a reputation for violence because of their strength and the popularity of inhumane practices such as dog fighting. If you must give up your dog, or if there is an emergency in your location, there are some organizations that accept pit bulls.
Local Dog Shelters
Animal shelters and dog shelters will usually take any breed of dog. Shelters are generally locally run and have varying rules about surrendering pets. Some shelters may require a fee to take a surrendered dog in order to help pay for its food and cost. However, shelters in areas where pit bulls are illegal cannot take pit bulls. Animal shelters, unless otherwise stated, have a time limit on how long they will keep dogs before euthanizing them.
National Humane Organizations
National and international humane organizations often are involved when there are emergencies or disasters involving pets. The American Humane Association and the Humane Society of the United States respond to emergencies such as floods, tornadoes and war-torn areas. Any dog, including pit bulls, who are in a life-threatening situation may react aggressively due to fear or injury, but trained animal handlers from these organizations understand deal with frightened dogs and retrieve them safely. These organizations sometimes also have local groups that take surrendered or lost pets.
No-Kill Shelters
Some local animal and dog shelters are no-kill shelters. No-kill shelters do not euthanize pets, even when they are not adopted. These shelters are often a "stepping stone" between its previous home and its future forever home. No-kill shelters provide surrendered pets with long-term living space and health care. Healthy pets are adopted out as quickly as possible, but no-kill shelters ensures your pit bull goes to an appropriate family following a vigorous vetting process.
Pit Bull Rescues
Pit bull rescue organizations take surrendered and unwanted pit bulls. They provide an environment specifically suited to the breed's needs. Some rescues have a shelter where all of the dogs are kept, and some foster them out to local families that care for them until adoption. Potential adopters must go through a screening process to ensure they are getting the right breed, and the right dog.
