Exactly What Does The Pup Lemon Law Say In Ohio

Puppy lemon laws help protect consumers with new pets.

Many states have applied lemon laws to the pet industry to protect consumers against purchasing an animal that may be in poor health. Ohio has not yet adapted pet lemon laws; however, there is currently a petition to the State of Ohio House of Representatives to pass a puppy lemon law.

Purpose of the Puppy Lemon Law

Puppy lemon laws, according to the Petition to the Ohio House of Representatives, offer financial and emotional protection to pet owners, encourage responsible breeding practices, and help to preserve the health and well being of dogs. The law allows consumers the safety of having a sick animal cared for or replaced without financial loss to the consumer.

Pet Lemon Law Coverage

Laws vary state to state, but a pet owner can usually return a pet within 2 weeks if an illness is discovered in the animal. If the animal's health can be restored, the law may require the pet supplier to reimburse the consumer for some or all veterinary expenses.

Proposed Ohio Puppy Lemon Law

The current petition in Ohio strives to enact a law to protect consumers if a dog younger than 15 months becomes seriously ill and/or dies from a congenital or hereditary disease.
