Papillons are also known as the butterfly dog.
The papillon is a happy, friendly and intelligent breed with distinctive butterfly-like ears. This toy dog lacks an undercoat, simplifying grooming. The elegant appearance, temperament and ease of maintenance make papillons a desirable breed. Papillons are suitable for apartment living, but are active and also do well with a yard that provides ample outdoor space to play. Consequently, if you are selling papillon puppies, their flexible nature provides a wide range of potential buyers.
Instructions
1. Obtain documentation on the puppies' parentage, including both sire and dam, if you are not the breeder. If the parents are purebred papillons, register the puppies with a national association. Buyers intending to show the dogs look for purebred puppies with registration papers. Puppies sold as pets do not require a pedigree; however, thorough documentation helps assure buyers that the breeder complied with healthy and responsible breeding practices.
2. List all possible hereditary diseases the parents of the puppies might have. Genetic diseases that affect papillons include patella luxation, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and epilepsy. While it's impossible to determine the diseases the puppies may develop in the future, inform buyers thoroughly on the puppies' current state of health and health of the parents.
3. Consult a veterinarian. The veterinarian will prepare a health certificate for each dog and, if the puppies have certain acute diseases, your veterinarian will recommend a suitable course of action.
4. Establish a vaccination schedule for the puppies and have them vaccinated prior to sale. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends four core vaccines for puppies: rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus and canine hepatitis. These shots are typically administered between up to age 18 weeks.
5. Compose an advertisement for the puppies. Keep the text short and simple, but make sure you include the age and color of the puppies, details about the parents, the asking price and contact details. Include a picture. Take a separate shot of each puppy or include a group picture. One litter may contain both papillons (erect-eared) and phalenes (drop-eared); they are considered varieties of the same breed. Specify the variety available for sale.
6. Submit the ad on websites specializing in puppy sales and include essential tags, such as "papillon puppies" or "papillons for sale". Some websites allow you to publish your ad for free. Search for websites that are dedicated to papillon dogs and, if they feature ads with puppies for sale, list your offer.
7. Run a print ad in a local paper. Print out the ad and display it in your area. Place your flier in pet clinics and pet supply stores, places pet-lovers are likely to visit.
8. Compose a contract for the potential buyers. The contract should contain your name, contact details and information about the papillon, such as its date of birth, gender and registration number. Include the price of the puppy and any payment arrangements. Date the contract and sign it. Have the buyer sign it as well. Certain breeders also offer a health guarantee in the contract.
