A dog should have enough room to stand up, lie down and turn around.
If you're training a dog or puppy and have a larger wire crate than you need, you can divide the space to make house training easier. Dogs try not to soil where they sleep, so allow enough room in the crate for it to lie down comfortably, stand up and turn around. Size the crate divider so the puppy or dog has roughly 2 1/2 times his length. If you make your own divider, you can adapt it as needed to provide more space as the dog grows.
Instructions
1. Place the dog in the crate to get an idea of how much space it should have. Measure the width of the crate you'll be dividing, from top to bottom and side to side. Record the crate measurements and take them with you to purchase the material for the divider.
2. Plywood, plexiglass or cardboard can be used to divide a crate.
Choose the material for your crate divider according to your puppy's needs. If he chews on things a lot, don't use cardboard or plywood. Plexiglass is a better choice and just as easy to work with. Lay the piece on the floor and trace the measurements before you cut. The divider should be tight enough to be a snug fit so the dog can't push it aside. Make it a bit wider than you need and trim it if necessary.
3. Fit the divider into the crate. Once the size is correct, punch holes in it on both sides, top and bottom, so you have four holes.
4. Insert a string into the holes and tie it to the sides of the crate.
