Grants or loans For Vet Schools

Grants can help defray the cost of becoming a veterinarian.

Prospective veterinarians can attend one of North America's 33 veterinary medical schools, which include 28 in the United States and five in Canada. The costs of these highly competitive programs vary greatly. In the United States, tuition ranges from an average of $15,676 for residents of a particular state, to $28,861 for non-residents. On average, Canadian schools charge C$5,651 for residents and C$32,942 for non-residents. Lodging, books and equipment fees add even more expense. Several grant programs can help defray this financial outlay.

Winner's Circle Scholarship Program

Each year, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) partners with The Race for Education to offer a scholarship to one student at each of the 34 North American and West Indies-based colleges of veterinary medicine. Award recipients must pursue studies in equine veterinary medicine and be enrolled in the fourth year of their respective school's program. Applicants must also be participating members in their student chapter of AAEP; the award committee especially recognizes leadership roles in these organizations. The AAEP has designed the award specifically to help offset the cost of studies for future practitioners of equine veterinary medicine and to encourage loyalty to the AAEP, The Race for Education and the industries of thoroughbred racing and breeding. Students can apply during their third year of studies in an accredited program by filling out an application form and turning it in to the faculty advisor of the student AAEP chapter at their university.

American Kennel Club

For over 10 years, the American Kennel Club (AKC)'s Veterinary Student Scholarship program has helped defray the cost of schooling for future veterinarians. The awards currently offer $135,000 in tuition aid for full-time students, broken down into a Chairman's Award and a President's Award ($15,000 each), the Dr. Asa Mays Award ($15,000), and 20 grants of $5,000 each from the AKC Companion Animal Recovery. A committee grants each award on a number of factors, including financial need, academic achievement and a student's past and current work or research with purebred dogs. Please note that individual students cannot apply directly for these awards. The AKC asks that a faculty member or official at an accredited veterinary medical program recommend four students for eligibility and submit a completed application on each student's behalf.

Zimmer Foundation

Each year the Zimmer Foundation awards up to $20,000 to one student studying veterinary medicine at an accredited college. This foundation accepts applicants who have served for a minimum of one year at a non-profit organization that provides care to orphaned cats (both employees and volunteers at such organizations can apply). Applicants should also research or study issues relating to geriatric feline care, as the award application requires the submission of an essay outlining the applicant's original research. Winners can renew this award on a yearly basis to continue defraying educational costs.
